Question about Waterway Champion 1 1/2 Hp 230v Energy Efficient Pump

Waterway pump not priming

I have a waterway frame 56 that is cavitating. I have checked ALL the seals and connections on the suction side. The Impeller is spinning freeley, I have used a drain jet and the skimmer lines do not seem plugged ( waterflow looks pretty good ) When the pump starts it will not prime, and the water coming in from the inlet is really foamy, If I shake a bottle of water it gets really foamy, we have not used a foaming algecide, the only thing we have done different is to add calcium ( at the suggestion of Leslies Pools employees ) we have a vinly liner with a clearly caribean system so there is no chlorine, and we have never had calcium in the pool before. Speaking with the folks at leslies was not helpful, I was told that even if there is something in the pool ( like calcium that will cause foaming ) that it will not cause a priming issue

One more thing, we also just installed a generic cartridge, could this cause the priming issue I have described?

Foam will definitely keep a pump from priming. Why do you think it's the calcium causing the foam? I have added large amounts of calcium to pools and I do not recall ever having any foaming issues.
Check to see if your impeller may be clogged. Take the lid off of the pump and fill the basket up with water. Leaving the lid off, start the pump for three seconds and then turn it off. The water should be sucked away almost instantly. If the water level drops slowly you have debris clogging the impeller. If that is the case the pump needs to be opened and cleaned.

Testimonial: "Thank you for confirming the foam issue, The reason we think its the calcium is that its the only new thing in the equation. I have have done as suggested and the water was sucked out of the pump instantly, "

Prime

Hi to prime your pump you fill the strainer basket with water and make sure all connections are tight with no leaks. Once you seal the lid turn on your pump and it should prime. If you have an issue you can force water through the suction line by putting a hose in the skimmer and force the water through your suction line. Time to Open the Swimming Pool

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

There is a seal in there that a local pump repair shop can fix for about $30 - $50 with parts and labor. Waterway pumps use a 1000 seal that is not a seal the homeowner is usually successful at replacing themselves.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

Is any one else out ther with a Waterways 56 pump replacing them every 3 years also?

The UK versions of the Waterway pumps seem to be very reliable. The only known issue is with the Run/Start capacitors which tend to fail but they're easily replaced.

Over the years I've heard of many pumps being changed unnecessarily.

Ian.

How do i remove impellor

The impeller in my 4 HP, 2-speed Waterway Executive High Performance 56 pool & spa pump has a brass coupling embedded in the back side. This coupling can be unscrewed from the motor shaft by keeping the shaft from rotating while turning the impeller in the reverse direction. Then the seal can be tapped out.

I've never seen a reassembly diagram for this particular pump but I'm guessing that you've installed the mechanical seal incorrectly.

Where is it leaking from exactly?

Kind Regards,
