There is a button that, when the scanner is new from packaging, is in the lock position. If you've been using your scanner for some time and it says this message( I've had this problem occur before) , you can reboot your computer and it will clear up.

Look at the bottom of the scanner and there should be a lock/unlock slider. Unlock it and see what happens.
If it is already unlocked then the drive/stepper motor or belt is bad.
If you receive this error even after unlocking the scanhead xerox suggests replacing the scanner assembly. Item Inc offers this part on exchange for much cheaper then xerox. Here's a video to show you how to fix this error/replace the scanner.">
My one touch 5800 USB scanner worked great on XP for over a year and then started giving me the unlock the scanner message. I tried different power supplies, reloading software and moving it to a machine running 98SE and nothing improved. I left the cover open and noticed that the lamp was fairly bright at the sides but very dim in the center. I replaced the lamp with one from an old parallel port scanner which was in good shape and it now works perfectly on 98SE. I have not connected it to a XP machine yet.
i was getting this message when i was using the wrong power supply, i used a diffrent power supply and restarted the computer and it no longer says it, so i couldnt tell you exactly which one made it work, but now i get a box telling me i dont have enough disk space??? any anwsers for that??
Most scanners shipped have a lock on them to prevent the top from opening up and damaging the glass. This is a screw type mabey other but a penny fits in mine. This may not be the case for you but look in your manual to find the unlock device.
This will also in some scanners prevent the stepper motor from moving in transit . The stepper motor is the device thats makes the bar slide up and down to scan the page.
Hope this helped some.

I had the same problem and the solution is this: There is a red lever switch by the power chord on the scanner/printer. Above this red lever switch is the drawing of a lock in the "locked" position and at the bottom this red lever switch is the drawing of a lock in the "opened (unlock)" position. The lever on the red switch should point to the "opened" lock symbol (unlock). It the switch lever is pointing to the "locked" position of the lock symbol, flip it to the "opened" position and recycle power on the scanner by removing the power chord for a 30 seconds. If the lever is pointing to the "unlock" lock symbol, flip it to the "locked" position and then back to the "unlocked" position and recycle power. Good luck!
