Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

1 Answer

What causes the coupling, part #285753A, to break frequently?

The "coupler" has broken twice in less than 1 year. My hope is that someone knows what adjustments/changes etc might be needed to prevent this from happening again. Could something else be out of kilter causing this to happen. Also this part is plastic. Does anyone know where a stronger coupling can be bought? (When the coupling breaks, the washer will not spin.

No, this is just an advertisement. This did NOT answer my question and I cannot figure out how to make the "thumb" turn down instead of up.

The drain filter is clogged. I had the same problem. There is a filter inside the "drain boot" (black) that comes from the drum to the drain pump. Mine was completely clogged with money, lint, etc..

SOURCE: I need to replace the motor drive coupler 285753A

This is a relatively easy fix for the basic Kenmore / Whirlpool washers.

Please see GURU JSROCK516 Description of how to remove cabinet and access the transmission.

Follow the instructions for removing the cabinet and pulling the pump, motor and motor mounting plate.

The coupler has two plastic pieces with three prongs each. In between is the rubber coupler with six holes.

Pry the plastic pieces from the motor and transmission. Some people use a claw hammer but I've found that using a small (6 inch) pry bar works well.

Carefully fit the plastic pieces over the motor and transmission shafts and press them in place (Use a 1/2" of larger socket to put pressure equally around the pieces.

Put the rubber piece on the transmission plastic piece.

Replace the motor mounting plate.

Carefully line up the plastic prongs on the motor based plastic piece to the three un-used holes in the rubber piece. If they don't line up right, the coupler could be damaged.

Mount the motor, don't forget the two screws, put the pump back on the motor and use its' clips.

Put the cabinet back on, don't forget to plug the lid switch back in and re-mount the console.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer.!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.22642100

It's likely that the brake (which stops the tub) is engaged when the clutch / transmission is removed.

A tab on the brake is engaged by the clutch spring.

If you are going to pull the transmission in order to get to the clutch (Sears has a clutch rebuild kit instead of having to buy the complete clutch assembly), I'd pull the brake and drive tube assembly also to check the brake and springs.

Following is an illustrated set of instructions on how to pull the pump, motor, transmission and brake assembly.

In order to get the agitators out, you need to remove the "Spanner Nut" and "Drive Block".

Many instructions call for a special spanner wrench to remove the nut. However,

You don't need a special spanner wrench. (About $20 retail)

I've used a short 10" pipe wrench (About $9 also good for cracking walnuts) hooked around one of the tabs on the spanner nut and tapped the handle with a hammer to loosen it.

Also, don't directly hit the drive block with a hammer (it's soft metal). Put a short piece of wood under the drive block and tap it up with a hammer.

My washer machine, it does not spin, just make a noice

What your experiencing with the noise and your washer not spinning, sounds very typical of a broken motor coupler..that style washer uses a coupler that directly couples the motor to the tranmission to make the washer spin& agitate. It uses that coupler instead of a belt, and its very common for the coupler to break. OIts very easy to replace..this youtube video will show you stepby step how to take apart the washer and replace the coupler.

I have Kenmore washer, model #110.28882790. grinding noise when in spin cycle. not spinning! What is possible defects?

Sounds like the washers drive coupling is broken. Part number 285753A. The coupling connects the motor to the transmission and when it breaks it can make a grinding noise. Since it is not turning the transmission anymore it cannot spin. Hope this helps

What causes a coupler to break?

If you are referring to the motor coupling on a Whirlpool manufactured top loader, these couplers wear out commonly from normal wear and tear. However, overloading the washer or frequent heavy loads can contribute to a shorter life span of the motor coupling. Replacement motor couplings are more resilient and resist breakage better due to the addition of a stainless steel grommet to strengthen it. The part number is 285753A. It can be purchased at for about $11. If you are in need of instructions on how to replace a motor coupling, the follow link explains:

My Kenmore washer is about 11 years old, but still looks brand new. The washer will fill with water, but the agitator does not move and the spin cycle gets bypassed. It is making a loud shrilly noise. ...

It sounds like you have a broken motor coupling. Kenmore washers around the age of yours have a direct-drive system. Meaning: it uses a small motor coupling between the drive motor and gearcase (transmission) to drive the agitator and spin functions. The coupler takes the place of a drive belt. Over a period of time the coupler can wear to the point where it breaks. This can happen more frequently if you wash heavy loads. This is not a significant problem and it can be easily repaired with a little guidance. The following link explains how to replace a coupler:

It may seem intimidating, but this is a very simple repair, that doesn't cost much either. Most couplers cost around $15 or less. This can save you a bunch in labor costs. If you wish to pursue this repair, a replacement can be purchased at for about $11. Use the "Search by Part Number" feature with the part number I provided in the link.

Enter your washer model number (located along the wash tub opening under the lid) and the website also has some excellent exploded view diagrams to assist you.

If I'm incorrect in my diagnosis, please post back and elaborate on your symptoms a bit more, so that I may be able to assist you better. I hope you find this information helpful.

Series 70 Top Loading

The symptoms you describe are typical of a broken motor coupling. The coupling is located between the drive motor and gearcase (transmission). The following link explains how to replace one:

The part number, along with where you can order one are also provided in the link. It is common for motor couplings to wear out and they aren't very expensive (less than $20). The coupler or bushing usually wears out and breaks, or the center hole of the coupler rounds out and begins to slip on the motor and gearcase shafts. The part number I provided is for a new improved coupler that is more durable than the original. If you do not wish to order online, take the part number provided and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. This is a common part that they will carry. I hope you find this information helpful. If I'm wrong with my assessment, or if you require additional assistance, please let me know.

Spin motor turns on, but drum does not spin

Okay, most recent model Kenmore top loaders have a DIRECT DRIVE transmission, which means it does not use a belt. If the model you have this listed under is correct, then the information below will shed some light on what may be wrong with your washer. Since the motor is turning as you stated, more than likely you have a motor coupling that has broken. The following link provides you with the steps necessary to replace one:

The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and gearcase (transmission). Some of the couplers that came from the manufacturer were made entirely out of plastic. Over a period of time, the center hole of the coupler (where it mounts to the motor shaft) would begin to wear and crack. Eventually, the coupler breaks. This is a common problem. A new improved coupler was manufactured to prevent frequent breakage and is more durable. At the bottom of the link is the part number you will need to order a new one. You can order on line at, or go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. This is a common part they should carry. The cost is about $15 or less.

I hope you find this information both helpful, and encouraging. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know.
