Question about Pool & Spa

I dropped the lid to the pentair 320 chlorinator for inground pools. The rubber gasket fell out and I don't know where it goes nor does it fit inside the lid. Do the gaskets go inside to screw on lid or somewhere else? Could it have possibly got stretched out? PLEASE HELP!!! The chlorinator leaks without the gasket.

Most o-rings that are squeezed in compression to form a seal will expand to slightly bigger than their original size when taken out of that situation. However, they will regain their original shape over time. If you want to speed this recovery, you can put an enlarged o-ring in your ice-box overnight. When you put the o-ring back inside a Pentair 320 cap where it belongs, preferably with silicon grease smeared on it, just screw the cap on until it begins to firmly resist, don't crank until you cannot twist it any more. If it leaks a little when you first turn on the pool pump, then tighten it a little more until the leak stops. This goes for all o-rings and rubber gaskets in things like taps and hoses. Just tighten them until they seal, don't punish them with heavy torque, and they will last many times longer. Cranking any rubbery seal just stresses and deforms it, shortening its shelf life and defeating its purpose.

Yes, the o-ring does swell up. I am not really sure what causes that, but the only fix is to replace it. It goes inside the cap. Only use teflon or silicone based lube on it.

their is a set screw in the side of the chlorinator towards the bottom (you should see a little hole in the side of the chlorinator near the base). remove that screw and the chlorinator will unscrew from the base.

It can be but probably isn't. A three inch tab is meant only to maintain your chlorine level. You must first bring the chlorine level up to specs, by adding either liquid or powdered chlorine, than add one or two tabs a week to hold it at that level.

Pentair 320

There is a term out there that is called "chlorine lock". It happens when the cyranuric acid level is excessive. Cyranuric acid (Cya) is also known by the names "conditioner" and "stabilizer".
Although it has not been scientifically verified, many pool pros including myself have run across chlorine lock, although it is very rare. An extensive study was done by Occidental Petroleum back in 1995 that took Cya levels to over 3000 ppm with no unusual effect on pool chemistry. (normal is 30-90 ppm)
However, it cannot be denied that chlorine can remain at high levels for weeks on end during the hottest times of the year with no additional doses.
The 320 chlorinator has been a staple in the industry for decades and has been proven very predictable and reliable.
Have your Cya level checked at a pool supply. If excessive, drain off some water and refill. Chlorine neutralizer is available at any pool supply to alleviate the high chlorine issue very quickly.

Pump won't prime any higher than basket. It has a good water flow into it. Just put in new seals on cartridge lid and basket cover.Don't see any cracks anywhere. Used lube on seals. Has been an off...

The pump is sucking air from somewhere. First, check pool water level and make sure it is up a few inches in the skimmer. Then, make sure the gasket on the square lid is in proper place and lubed. Next, check the drain plug on the bottom of pump housing in front of suction side of pump, and make sure there is a rubber gasket on it and tighten, if no gasket, remove and put 8-9 wraps of teflon tape on it and put back in and tighten. next, check the pipe going in to the pump and try and turn it or move it clockwise or counterclockwise, if it moves even a litttle bitfreely or has slop in it, it may be melted from pump running dry at one time or another. to repair you will need to cut the pipe on the suction side, 2 inches past the back of the fitting that screws into pump. unscrew loose fitting, wrap with 8-10 wraps of teflon tape and re insert and tighten. install a coupling on the remaining open ends. and last but not least, if all this above didnt do the trick, you will have to have your suction line pressure tested for a leak.

CL-200 lid won't lock into place because it's to tight.

Gasket in lid is swollen from chlorine gas over time, check to see if you can tuck back in and lubricate it with a silicone grease. if to swollen, replace gasket.

Pentair 320 (inline) clorine not disolving

Three possible solutions, and I have personally made use of all of them with great success.

1. A common reason why the flow of water through the Pentair 320 canister is insufficient to dissolve the chlorine tablets is that the pool filter is dirty or just too old with ingrained sediment. If your pump pressure is continuously running high then this usually indicates a dirty or old filter that is making it difficult for the pump to get an adequate flow of water through the chlorinator. If thoroughly cleaning it makes no difference, treat yourself to a new filter; it's often an immediate fix and the pump pressure drop may amaze you. Old filters that have served their time are deceiving. They may look clean but the fine sediment trapped in their fibers can seriously degrade performance downstream in the chlorinator.

2. Another trick to help SEE what is going on is to replace the short black feeder hose to the Pentair 320 canister with PVC tube, 5/8" outside diameter, 1/2" inside diameter, and a short piece of Pyrex tubing inserted into the middle of the PVC tube to serve as a clear sight glass. PVC tube is rated 100 psi and is readily available at just 50 cents a foot at local hardware stores. Pyrex tube with an outside diameter of 1/2 inch (13 mm) can be bought cut to length for about a dollar per inch from EBay sellers. I also strongly recommend swapping this new feed tube assembly to the UPPER inlet of the chlorinator and moving the plug from there down to the lower inlet. See the attached photo.
You will need an 8 inch and 3 inch length of PVC tube, and a 4 inch length of Pyrex tube. Insert the ends of the Pyrex tube 1/2 inch into each piece of PVC tube with some Goop glue smeared all around the outside of the Pyrex ends. Do not get any Goop inside the Pyrex tube, and do this as quickly as possible, rotating the Pyrex as you insert it into the PVC to ensure that the Goop forms a complete seal. Then let it set, preferably for 24 hours.
Now you have a new feed tube 14 inches long in total, 3 inches of which is the Pyrex sight glass. Just take the unions and spring off the original black hose and transfer them to the new PVC tube, putting the spring on the 8 inch piece of PVC tube. The 3 inch piece of PVC tube should be at the top of the feed where it enters the Pentair control valve.
You will now be able to observe the rate of flow of bubbles in the Pyrex tube (transparent PVC tube soon becomes opaque because of the chlorine but Pyrex remains clear) and know if water is proceeding up the tube and then cascading down over the chlorine tablets. Adjust the Pentair control valve to check if the bubbles speed up and slow down.

3. Lastly, when you open the Pentair 320 to insert new chlorine tablets, the water will normally drain down and out of the canister. IMPORTANT - When you restart the pool pump, keep the cap OFF the canister but have it ready. Assuming you have the Pentair control valve set above 0 (zero) flow, you should soon see water starting to flow through your new PVC feeder tube and then entering and rising up in the canister. When it gets past the top of the chlorine tablets screw the cap on until it feels firm but not cranked hard. If it leaks a little, tighten until that stops. Now you have got rid of that potential air trap that can prevent water rising to completely cover the tablets. Do this EVERY TIME you add new tablets to the canister.80edc77f-aab6-45be-854b-dcd213e89f9c.jpg
