If timing belt is off by one tooth could it cause it not to crank? 98 neon 2.0 L single cam

1 Answer

A

Anonymous

The pulley on the crankshaft turns the timing belt
The top ends of the timing belt turn the cams
You need to go to You Tube Video & watch how things work
If your referring to the valves hitting the pistons & not turning,
no,not with a tooth or two off.
Still have to be sure the belt is good & timing correct, not
jumped, as your asking

The keyway and or the dot on the crank should be line at 12 oclock. You will see a point on the oil pump housing to go by. On the camshaft the pointer will be at 12 oclock also. Use the O on the camshaft to the top at mark. Be sure to look at the dist. roter to make sure that it is pointing at the #1 spark plug wire. I could get 180 out of time. If you do it right it should start up right away. then you can use a timing light to finish it.

SOURCE: 97 dodge neon timing belt broke while going down

I do not have good news for you.
According to the Gates Timing Belt guide 2002 Edition, both engines offered in the Dodge Neon are interference engines.
This means that your engine has likely sustained sgnificant valve, cylinder head or even piston damage. Have you tested the compression?
It is probably least expensive to buy a used engine, change its timing belt and replace your engine with that one.

Crank and flywhleel timing marks

You can find the timing mark on the end of a crank shaft by looking for an indented dot which marks top dead center.
A flywheel is balanced and does not need a mark. However if the wheel you refer to is a cam gear (one or two gears depending on how many cam shafts your engine has) look for 2 dots with a tooth grove between the two dots. A matching drive gear will have a single dot aligned with a tooth on the drive gear. When put together the single tooth marked on the drive gear must fall into the grove marked the the 2 dots on the cam gears.

If you are just trying to time an engine, the belt drive pulley mounted to the crank shaft will have a single indented line. The line can get filled with dirt so you can't see it. Wipe it clean and fill with grove with something to highlight the groove, as with a white or yellow crayon or a dob of bright paint. Associated with the belt drive pulley, there should be a metal plate with line marks spaced on it, with 0 degrees (top dead center TDC) marked on it, When the engine is running, using a strobe light connected to your number 1 spark plug you will see where the timing mark on the belt drive pulley is compared to the metal plate with the timing marks.

Timing belt jump

Remove the t belt and reinstall it. Sounds like you were a half a tooth of on the cams wich would put you a tooth off on the crank. A lack of power makes sense with bad cam timing a s could, very well throw a miss. The misfire did not cause timing to jump

Replace timing belt on 2005 neon and now have codes for fuel trim issues

I would say there is a good chance one of the cams is off a tooth or two.
The cam can be off enough to cause the cam sensor to send the wrong signal to the computer but the engine will still run.

I have a dual over head cam 97 neon.It is not firing, i changed the crank sensor, the coil, and still no fire. the relay was switched.no fire. The last time it run yesterday, it run horrible. Backfiring,...

remove your valve cover and have someone try to crank it over while you watch the camshaft to see if it turns, your timing belt may have jumped a tooth ( causes bad running and back fire ) and then broke

I want to know were is the mark of the timing of a neon 98

The timing marks are on the crank shaft pulley, but nowadays, you don't have a distributor to move so they don't put them on cars anymore. All of the advance adjustments are made by computer, unless you are changing a timing belt, then you will have 2 dots marking tdc for the number one piston on the crankshaft, Then the cams should be aligned the same way with the 2 small dots, then the new belt should have marks on it also, and all 3 will align together. If they don't, it won't go far.

I just resently replaced a brken timing belt on my 96 neon

Neons used a DOHC interference type engine. I hate to tell you this, but the valves are bent, and your entire valve train (possibly your cylinder head) needs to be repaired or replaced all together.

My neon is showing a dtc code 1390, timing belt has skipped one or more teeth. Checked the timing marks and everything is as it should be, should I condemn the cam sensor, or the crankshaft sensor? Or is...

P1390 means cam/crank not in time. Probably slipped a tooth on the cam belt (Installed wrong most likely, easy to do) or, just a chance, cam timing sensor is bad. Take it apart and look ,if you bought the car this way you may have wrong or damaged timing gear, stick shift or automatic may have different shape where the sensor rides,
