This is a very common error message. You have simply logged yourself off of the machine, and it is telling you that no-one is assigned to use this register. You need to log back on.
Now, it depeds upon whether anyone has changed the key labels. If not, then look for a button called:
On your model, I think it is the CLK# along the top row. It will usually be along the top of the keyboard, or near the paper feed button(s).
You need to press 1 on the number pad, then CLK# (or whatever it is labelled). This will log operator 1 onto the machine. Do this in REG mode by the way. If you get it right, most Sharps will show '-01-' on the display.
Then you should be able to use it again.
If it doesn't work, just let me know.

SOURCE: cash register scanner
Here is a link for the Cash Register and tells how to program it.
I suspect the you plugged the unit in after the cash register was under power.
unplug the register and reinitialize it with the scanner plugged in so it will actually see it.
Then try using it again

they have a customer service hotline
1-800-BE-SHARP. The online manual doesn't say anything about the program disk. If you don't have the manual look here: http://www.sharpusa.com/products/TypeManuals/0,1083,111,00.html

9 => SBTL => Tax Number (1-4**) => @/TM => R => @/TM => Q => CA/AT/NS
"R": TAX RATE (0.0000% to 99.9999%) x10000
(Enter the rate in 6 digits. Leading Zeros may be ommited)
"Q": MINIMUM TAXABLE AMOUNT (0.01 to 99.99) x100
(Smallest amount for which tax must be collected)
**Up to 4 types of tax are programmable
Hope this helps!

SOURCE: i have a xe-a404 sharp
You have not assigned anyone to operate it. It is asking someone to log on as a user. If the PIN numbers have not been changed, try pressing 1 then CLK# button.
If anyone needs more information, the Sharp XE-A404 manual is here: http://the-checkout-tech.com/manuals/cashregisters/Sharp_XE-A404_instruction_programming_manual.html
