Question about Computers & Internet
My computer (specification below) has many problems. The most annoying one occurs when I try to to to turn the PC on, or boot up. A very high proportion of the time it fails to boot. I just get a black screen, nothing appears to happen (no cursor, no message). In fact, when this occurs the fans are spinning rapidly, and there is power to the USB ports. The hard disk light flashes very briefly, then the PC tries the floppy drive and the CD and DVD (all normally empty, with a bootable floppy in the drive nothing happens either). The computer does not beep at all. Rarely, the PC boots up apparently as normal. But in this case the CPU fan does not spin, at least not until the CPU temperature has risen to 60C (unless I start it earlier using Speedfan). The USB has power,. The computer does not beep. After it starts it will run until there is a power cut, or I am forced to power down in order to reset the modem, or because a program has got stuck and I am unable to do anything. The computer often will not 'restart', getting stuck while "shutting down windows". Typically, I run for days at a time. (very) Limited diagnostics show RAM is as expected (1.5GB), and as graphics works normally after PC has booted I do not suspect faulty insertion of the graphics card. The computer does sometimes seem slow (slower than I remember it being in the past), notably when switching between open programs, doing screen updates (eg., rewriting the desktop after closing a window), and internet access (IE explorer). The PC is: Compaq Presario S5160UK DT261A under XP/SP3 Processor - Celeron 2.7 GHz Motherboard - MSI MS-6577 v2.1 RAM - 1GB + 512MB (1GB +1GB max) DDR PC2700 PSU - Octigen 300W model 10270PSOTG ('upgraded' from original Bestec 250W PSU [in 2011?]) Nvidia GeForce 6200 graphics card in AGP slot. Can anyone help me improve this situation ? (without spending much as the PC is not physically worth much) 22.July.2013
From the description you have given, I would suggest that you re-install the operating system(Windows) make sure you save any thing on the computer that you can't live without. (Music, photos and videos). You will need to do a format of the hard drive. As you may have an unknown piece of malware or just a badly corrupted operating system.

Testimonial: "Thank you, Michael. I will have to follow the HP procedure on that because OS was preinstalled and the back-up OS is on a hidden partition on the HDD. That my OS may be corrupted should not prevent the PC from POSTing, though, should it ? There is no hint of malware, I use AVG and have run microsoft's msert program recently"
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.

click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
