My brother 5840CN. lit says unable to print. the manual says to take the jam out - there was no jam. Turn it off, then on. i did that. It still says unable to print, look at troubleshooting page

errr.....No, no it does not. The Manual says that "unable to clean" means one of two things.....
1. The MFC has a mechanical problem.-OR-2. A foreign obstacle, such as a clip or ripped paper, is in the MFC.
but regardless, I don't believe it *IS* a 'cleaning' problem per se.Try resetting the power purge counter.

Press menu > Mono Start > 4x Arrow up after another. All lights will flash.
1. Power clean - Press 7>6>4 >Mono? Start.
2. Power Purge: 7>6 >3 >Mono Start.
Press 9>9 to exit maintenance mode. Run a print quality test print.

My printer Brother MFC-5840CN reads Unable to Clean What can I do

Welcome to Fixya

You need to clear the ink waste counter and clear the purge counter. Please see procedure below:

- pull out the AC plug
- put back the AC plug while holding down the "menu" button and keep holding it (15 sec)
- now you are entering the MAINTENANCE mode and "error 46" pops up in the display
- select 8 by using the arrow buttons ,push OK and select 0 and push OK
- 00:00 OK (the display is showing this message)
- now push the START button 25 times until you see PURGE: xxxxx
- Press 2783
- the purge counter indicates now: purge: 00000
- switch off the printer ,switch it on

Thank you for using Fixya!

Brother MFC-5840CN Will not print and message say's, "Unable to clean. See chapter in user guide". I don't see anything that can fix this problem. I have been successful in the past with turning it off and...

Inside the machine is a large plastic box packed with felt pads. The machine cleans its printheads by squirting ink through all the nozzles to blast them clear, then pumps that used ink into the Ink Absorber Box. When it calculates the the box is getting full, it puts up the message you reported. The box (Brother part number LF4818001) is a fairly cheap part, but getting to it is kind of complicated. Instructions for the nearly-identical model 5440 are here. Two other options worth considering are finding a local servicer on brother's website, or replacing the machine.

I have a brother 5840cn all in one printer, it says unable to clean, how do I fix. Mary

If you look at the Brother you will find a trouble shooting guide for your machine.

In the guide, for the error you quote Brothers guidance is to check for a stuck piece paper, however it also states that if the print head is hard over to one side (righthand side if memory serves me correct), then to contact Brother. If you do so, Brother will tell you it needs to be serviced by a Brother agent, which will likely cost you more than a new one !

If it isnt a stuck peice of paper, the problem is due to the fact that Brother machines excessively self-clean. Each time they self-clean a small amount of ink is dumped in to a holding tank/sponge. When a predefined number of self-clean operations have been performed, the machine refuses to print and gives the error message you have stated. Brother state that the tank/sponge must be replaced before the counter is reset.

However, there is a way of reseting the self-clean counter yourself - if you Google your model number and the error code soemwhere in the results you'll find how to do it. The only risk of doing this without changing the tank/sponge is that it will eventually overflow and leak out the bottom, but I did my Brother all in one some time ago and have had no problems yet.

Unable to clean message in brother dcp-115c aio

I saw on this site codes for another MFC to clear memory and reset the cleaning unit count code to zero. It worked on two of my brother mfc 820cw units. The third mfc 5840cn had unable to print error message 46- nothing at Brother. they want you to take everything to a repair shop.they don't help at all. Then the error went to 4F when I tried toclear the memory. As Iunderstand that message- it means I have to replace the printer head. Have no clue where or what it is. But I can read a manual as well as anyone and follow directions to fix it! Can't be worse than it is now! Good luck
