SOURCE: Kenwood KDC 241 SA car radio 'Protect'.

you could have a shorted speaker wire, a blown speaker; or the output ic in the deck itself could be bad.

SOURCE: kenwood kdc-mp345u keeps flashing protect,

Chances are pretty good either the output ic or the volume control ic inside of the radio are bad. Both require the ability to use a soldering iron to replace.

Faceplate has not illumination

I'm not sure what you mean by extra red wire. Are you saying that there are two red wires? Generally most radios these days require two power sources. The yellow wire for most after market goes to a constant power source and the red wire goes to ignition or switched power source. Both wires need to be hot in order for the radio to work.

Try checking all of your speakers and speaker wires for shorts and/or grounds. If they all check out, try resetting the deck. If that doesn''t work, you may have a bad internal output ic.

Radio works but face plate shows nothing

You have two possibilities. You can try cleaning the contacts on the back of the radio and on the subpanel with qtips and rubbing alcohol or a pencil eraser. If that doesn't work, you may have bad solder connections on some surface mount resistors inside of the radio. If you are good at soldering they should be on the right front of the radio, you will have to remove the cd mechanism to get to them.

I bought a car with a KDC BT945U Audio Radio, but no manual. All it does is blink "Protect". It has a remote but pressing buttons on it doesn't change anything. Where can I get an...

The manul for the KDC-BT945U is available from Kenwood: http://www.kenwoodusa.com/Car_Entertainment/2010_Car_Entertainment/KDC-BT945U . Click on the Manuals tab. The direct link to the English version of the manual is http://manual.kenwood.com/files/4c3ba7ba66e53.pdf .

When Protect is blinking in the display, there is a short circuit in the speaker wire. Make sure that it is correctly installed and that the wire is not touching the chassis. Insulate the wire if needed. Then press the Reset button which is on the front of the main part of the unit (rotate the faceplate down) on the left side. (It's about where the source button is on the faceplate.) See page 70 of the manual for the wiring diagram and page 4 for a picture of the Reset button.

If the Protect message continues, you need to take it in to a service center.

I hope this helps.

My kdc-mp335 is on protect i need to know how to get it off

First check your speakers and speaker wires to make sure you have no shorts and/or grounds. If your speakers and speaker wires are fine, try pressing the reset switch if there is one. It should either be a pencil tip sized indentation somewhere on the face (it will not be marked) or behind a small hole on the subpanel behind the face. If there is no reset switch, you can reset it by disconnecting power to the radio for a few seconds. You can do this by disconnecting one of the battery cables if you can't get to the back of the radio. If that doesn't work you probably have a bad output ic.

Security Code for Protect mode

Turn on the car so the radio is flashing "Protect." Look on the front / removable face of the stereo. On it you will find a small round hole - that's a reset button. Find a small paper clip, unfold the clip and stick it gently into the hole. The "Protect" will stop flashing, and Kenwood will be displayed. Unfortunately all your settings/presets will be gone, but at least the stereo is working again!
