SOURCE: ice dispenser in door clogged up or frozen

I see this a lot with people who mainly used crushed ice.  It will leave small pieces of ice behind and add up to a clogged situation.  If you mainly used crushed ice you will need to run full cubes thru every so often to keep the chute clear.  Another cause of this would be the flapper door on the dispenser doesn't close completely and warm air gets in and melts the ice in the bin so it clumps together and won't dispense.  In this case you may need to replace the solenoid that shuts the door and/or the door.  Let me know what you find.

SOURCE: GE Profile side by side fridge - water dispenser doesn't work

More than likely, your water line is freezing up in the door. You can remove all of the ice cubes and lower the freezer temp to about 3. Leave the freezer door open for about 5 minutes or so and if this does not work, leave the door open a little longer. Also, disconnect the water line at the base of the freezer door, near the floor, and press the dispenser lever. If you have water there, you most likely have a frozen line in the door. Changing the water filter often will help but it is not the answer and is can get quite expensive. By the way, Make sure to hold the dispenser lever forward for at least a couple of minutes each time you test for water flow. If you do not get water at the connector at the base of the door after you have disconnected the line, you have a problem with the valve in the back of the refrigerator.

SOURCE: Water line to water dispenser is freezing up inside the freezer

Try using an hairdryer or defrosting the unit completely , this often get rid of blockage caused by frozen lines fixing the problem.

The water lines can also be unblocked from dirt using a thin flexible shaft. This after defrosting.

If all that does not fix the problem, then you may need to replace the water valve, the icemaker solenoid, or the whole icemaker assembly.

Kenmore Elite side by side - Icemaker chute freezes up, no ice

Hi,

To make sure I am understanding you correctly, are you saying that after a normal fill, water continues to drip into the ice maker and freezes in the fill chute?? If yes, than replace the water valve.

If not then:

does the flap shut all the way? Sounds like you are drawing moisture from the chute. The flapper should seat so that no air is being drawn in. I have seen a number of these Kenmore where the pin and spring retainer has broken off from the dispensor housing causing this problem. They use to replace the whole freezer door because the dispensor housing is not a servicable part. They have now come out with a kit to address this problem. This is not a fun job for a first timer. You may want to contact Kenmore and inquire about the aforementioned. If this is your case, there is a good chance they will cover it.

Goodluck,

What to do if your ice maker stops working

Many refrigerators now come with built-in ice makers. Ice makers are very convenient, but occasionally they'll develop problems. Why pay a repairman to come out if the fix is easy and you can do it yourself?

Here are some tips for fixing an ice maker that stopped working.

- Check the on/off switch

Freezers with automatic ice makers have a switch that is used to turn the ice-making feature on or off. This switch is typically a rod above the ice box; when it's lowered, the ice maker is on, and when it's raised the ice maker is off. If the ice box fills up with ice, the ice can force the rod up, turning off the ice maker. Check this bar to be sure it is in the lowered position.

- Check if the auger or chute is clogged

Your ice maker has a chute where the ice falls from the freezer into the external tray (where a glass is placed). There is also an auger inside the freezer that rotates to drive the ice forward from the ice box into the chute. Check the chute for large chunks of ice that may be clogging it up, and check the auger for ice cubes or chunks that might have gotten wedged between the auger and the freezer, causing the auger to be unable to rotate.

- Check the water line

If you still haven't found the problem, check the water line leading into the freezer. This water line has its own valve. Make sure the valve is open, allowing water into the freezer to create the ice.

Ice maker over flows

Not sure on this brand, but on some ice makers, there is an adjustment for the length of time the water the water runs down the chute. See if the ice maker instruction sheet is in the back of the unit - it may show where and how to adjust the time. Another idea would be to partially close the water valve that goes to the ice maker unit, so less water gets into the ice maker. However, over time, this will mean the valve will leak through when the valve is turned off. Good Luck

The water is freezing in the chute coming down to the ice maker from the water line before it can get into the ice slots. what could be causing that ????

Sometimes water molecules will gather there over time and eventually will bulid up. chances are you have a plastic chute and those tend to gather ice easy opposed to the rubber ones. Either way, if you pull the chute out from the back of the refrigerator and clear the ice out you'll be back in business.

The water feed to the ice maker is frozen - I can see that it is plugged with frozen water. I was able to get the frozen water out of the chute that leads to the ice maker but I can still see the ice...

Hi,

This usually means the water inlet valve that feeds the ice maker is bad. It can bypass a small amount of water and that water runs so slow that it freezes in the tube you are clearing.

The valve I am talking about is behind the frig on the bottom, it should be blue in color.

To clear the ice from the tube use hot water and a turkey baster, or a hair dryer.

The part number for the water valve is 4389177

The ice maker doesn't work. I can get cold water from the refrigerator so I assume that the line is not frozen. I just changed the water filter to see if that might help but it didn't.

Check the folllowing:

The end of the ice chute inside the freezer compartment that dumps into the ice tray - they can feeze and block water flow.

Remove the water chute and see if the water orifice is frozen. If so, it will block water flow. it can be thawed out with a hair dryer (carefully).

If no luck, look for a bad water valve or possible kink in the water line. This valve is usually located under the back of the fridge behind a cover.

If all ok, there could be an issue with the ice maker itself or on some units, a control circuit board.

Try unplugging the fridge, let it sit for at least 5 minutes and then plug it back in and see what happens.
