SOURCE: Blades will not engage

Lever that adjusts height does not make blades turn. You need to engage the blade lever and if you can not tell if the blades are turning then they probably aren't. check belt it could need replacement.

Sounds like the seat safety switch is shorted or worn out. You can test it with a short length (about 6") of wire. Strip about a half inch from each end of the wire, unplug the connector under the seat and plug your "jumper" wire in to each side of the connector (NOT the seat switch) If it now works, replace the seat switch

Where can I purchase replacement blades?

Hi Jim, you can buy replacement blades for your riding mower at most hardware, or lawn and garden store. I believe Sears home and garden has them also. They are the same as a regular push mower blade, but smaller because you have 2-3 blades. I'll put a link to help you out. All you really need is the model of your mower, and blade length.

Sears model 143.006706

When you whack something that hard and the engine stops immediately 99% of the time you sheared the Keyway between the Flywheel and the Engine crank. When this shears, the flywheel shifts which throws off the Ignition Timing. You need to take off the Recoil starter and then take off the Flywheel, Any small engine place will have a keyway replacement. The keyway Cost pennies

What is the part no. of the blades on a 42 in. mower

You can go to Sears' website at and enter your model # (usually found under the seat) to view the diagrams for your model and locate your part #'s. Once you find the Sears #'s, you can find replacement blades for your mower at Partsbuggy's Sears page here - It also lists Sears' part numbers along with the blades and belts by deck size.

I need to find mounting bolts, blade to shaft

Do you meanengine mounting bolts, blade boss, and 'Operator Presence Control' cable? If so, they are generic parts - not specific to your mower. I have no idea why you are having problems ordering them - they are consumable parts, and should be stock items for ant garden machinery repair outlet.

Change rotory blade on craftsman 917377794

This is a nice mower, it has a Honda engine. The blade bolts onto a "blade brake clutch" which is why you see 3 bolts. Removing the two outer bolts should release the blade. Normally these bolts are about 1/4" to 5/16" diameter at the threads, and have split washers to prevent them from accidentally coming loose from vibration or impact.

Here's the steps I use when replacing the blade:

  1. Pull the spark plug wire off the spark plug.
  2. Lay the mower over on it's side (gas filler cap should be up, so whichever side allows the gass filler cap to end up on the high side of the engine).
  3. Find a wrench that properly fits the blade bolts.
  4. If right-handed; wearing a garden or protective work glove on the left hand, grasp the blade.
  5. Unbolt both bolts by turning in a counter-clockwise direction (left circular direction).
  6. Remove the bolts being sure not to lose the locking washers.
  7. Pull the blade off the blade mount (sometimes a light tap is necessary to loosen the blade from the blade mount).
  8. Replace the blade with the exact Sears part number (diagram and parts list attached below).
  9. Thread the bolts back on using your fingers to get them started - don't force them if they start to bind or you'll cross-thread them; bad thing).
  10. Snug the bolts down tight, sufficient to compress the locking washers flat.
  11. Don't overtighten, they need to be tight, but if you use a long handle wrench or ratchet drive you can cause them to break or fail while the balde is spinning, another bad thing. Tighten them snug assuring the washers compressed flat.
  12. Turn the mower back upright onto its wheels.
  13. Replace the spark plug wire back onto the spark plug.
  14. Leave sit for 30 minutes before starting to assure the oil has returned level in the engine before you attempt to start the engine.
Here's your diagram and parts list:,-Walk-Behind-Lawnmower&diagramPageId=00001&componentDescription=ENGINE/HOUSING/HANDLE/BAG/BLADE&documentId=P0401287&backToLink=Return%20to%20Sub%20Components%20list
