Question about John Deere Muffler 1010 Diesel Tractors

Open Question

I have a 1967(?) JD2020, main hydraulic pump is not getting hydro fluid so no power steering or 3-pt hitch lift. How does the hydro fluid get pumped around?

    I was told these tractors have a supply pump internal to the transmission and you have to split the tractor to get to it. Is that true and does anyone have experience doing such?

I would suggest you find a JD dealer and buy a manual if you want to do the maintenance yourself. You can also do a Google search and find manuals.

I would also suggest you completely drain the old hydraulic fluid and replace it with new fluid and a new filter if it has not been serviced any time in the recent past.

The symptoms you describe can be low fluid and/or a clogged filter. If you or anyone else has run the tractor too long and it has low fluids and/or a clogged filter, you can damage the hydraulic pump and that can get costly.

Are you using hydralic fluid (not eng oil) in her?
Can you let it run on blocks for a bit - drain and re-fill transmission?

Check your hydro preasures,pump could be going out,also could be in your relieve valve which will be cheaper,hope that is your problem because of the cost,Sound like you know alot about it, and trust you have a high mechancal ability,I have a hunch it could be in you valve, hope this helps,

Where do I test The Hyd.pessure


place a hydraulic pressure gauge in the out let line from the pump and activate controls
make sure the gauge you use has a reading capability of at least 10.000psi
if you do not have access to a gauge then get a hydraulic specialist in to do the test and diagnose the fault
that probably will be the cheapest and best option as you get a pressure reading and an idea of exactly is the fault.

Hello! There are power steering fluid in/out hoses but no vacuum lines...It sounds as if the pump needs to be bled of air or the belt is loose...Belt should move about 1/2 to 3/4"...Bleeding is as follows...

  1. Fill pump reservoir with fluid to minimum system level, FULL COLD level, or middle of hash mark on cap stick fluid level indicator.
  2. ImportantWith hydro-boost only, the oil level will appear falsely high if the hydro-boost accumulator is not fully charged. Do not apply the brake pedal with the engine OFF. This will discharge the hydro-boost accumulator.
  3. If equipped with hydro-boost, fully charge the hydro-boost accumulator using the following procedure:
  4. 2.1. Start the engine.2.2. Firmly apply the brake pedal 10-15 times.2.3. Turn the engine OFF.
  5. Raise the vehicle until the front wheels are off the ground. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

Yes, your brakes are boosted by the power steering pump rather than by vacuum. I don't think it's air in the system. More likely your pump has failed, but you can try bleeding the pump. Here is a procedure from autozone.com:

Observe the following:
Use clean, new power steering fluid type only Hoses touching the frame, body or engine may cause system noise. Verify that the hoses do not touch any other part of the vehicle. Loose connections may not leak, but could allow air into the steering system. Verify that all hose connections are tight.


NOTE Power steering fluid level must be maintained throughout bleed procedure.

  1. Fill pump reservoir with fluid to minimum system level, FULL COLD level, or middle of hash mark on cap stick fluid level indicator.

Hydraulics get were they won't lift anything like round hay bales etc.


can be a lot of different problems-check fluid level if low fill to proper level --leak in hydro line-check all lines for leak--air in system -bleed system -wrong hydro fluid in system-check for correct fluid---seal at pump leaking-check around pump--controls leaking not holding allowing back pressure--test controls for internal leaks repair or replace if necessary--hydro pump internal malfunction/valves/piston/gears-pressure test repair or replace if necessary

Hydraulic lift will pump up about 1/3 of intended height. At that point pedal feels soft and lift won't rise more.


What are you talking about, the bike or the bike lift?

If your hydraulic bike lift is doing what you say, it is low on hydraulic fluid, check the reservoir. HINT: The reservoir is the housing where the shiny bar extends out from; there will be a fitting on it that can be removed to check hydro levels. HINT: Before you remove that fitting, MAKE SURE THE LIFT IS ALL THE WAY DOWN; if you try this with it up, you will spray hydro fluid everywhere.

The relief valve may be by-passing, or your pump is cavitating..If you can hear a hissing... its the relief...if you hear whining or chuttering sounds... it is the pump cavitating.It sounds much like a power steering pump. Check your fluid level. **Note There may be water in the system if the oil is really milky looking, also from the cavitation of the pump which causes air in system. And then....Go from there or ask more.

Power steering went out along w/brakes


Does it have a hydroboost brake booster? Is the belt still on the p/s pump? Have you checked the power steering fluid level? If yes and good to all, replace the Power steering Pump.

F350 super duty power stroke diesel loss of power steering when standing still


Power steering pump is weak. If a hydraulic gauge were placed on the pump, you would find it only able to produce about 200-400 psi at an idle. PS requires up to 1500psi. A new pump would produce 1500psi at an idle so replace the pump and you will be fine. By revving up the motor you are able to make the pump put out more psi. The pump is defective internally. Get a good one from the junkyard. Most PS pumps last the life of the vehicle.
