The chances are that the part you are describing is a Capacitor and is part of the power circuit. It can be replaced and they are commonly described like this when failed. The capacitor failure will give the symptoms you describe.

Sorry Michael, you have a problem in the audio amp section of the receiver and unless you know how to troubleshoot solid state electronics, you will need to have this unit serviced by a pro. Good Luck

HTR-5280 Receiver Fuse Blown

the fuse rating should be printed at the back near the fuse holder itself. If it opens the fuse again and again probably you have a circuit loading problem in the receiver...either one of the amps is failing.

sounds like you have the polairity reversed on the speakers
and yes it does make a difference
check polairity also make sure unit is well ventelated
you wouldnt use your compouter if it was inside a card board box
so make sure the reciever can breath also
recievers get too hot and they start blowing chips off the board

Problem with sp cable (yamaha)

The speaker cables are the ones that clamp or tighen down on the back of the reciever. All the spkr wires have to have the positive and negative leads correct. Also not aven one little strand of wire can be touching another conductor or you will have this problem. Make sure all leads are correctly ran and hooked up positive to positive and negative to negative from the back of the reciever all the way to the speakers. This should solv your problem.

Should I just Buy a new one?

You have a bad power supply or the audio output circuit has a short in it. You are correct by saying its probably betterv off getting a new unit. Most likly cost you more then a brand new shiny unit would . Good Luck PS Please do not forget to rate this thread
