Question about Maytag Atlantis MAV7551 Top Load Washer

What is blck powder under the motor of belt drive Maytag washer MAV4057AWW

2 Questions: What is the black powder under my motor in belt drive Maytag washer? I have found similar question for direct drive and the answer was coupler. This is a belt drive, I don't believe there is a coupler. How loose or stiff should the motor pulley be? My pump pulley very easily turns either direction but motor pulley is very stiff although it can be moved either direction, it is difficult.

The powder is belt wear. Not to worry though, they last a long time. There is always some wear on all belts as they slide into the channel on the pulley.

SOURCE: Grinding sound from washer

Could be the transmission or the brake assy is going bad. Go to http://www.repairclinc.com and enter your model and see if you wanna spend the money for the parts. The brake assy is very reasonable but the replacement transmission is over 200 bucks. Now you say you spun around the tube freely and found nothing inbetween them . To use it only time will tell but it will only get worse. The wrse that can happen is that the part thats bad will freeze up and not workanymore. Good luck

SOURCE: washer won't spin or agitate

On this model the motor turns one way for spin and the other for agitation. This action is controlled by a thrust bearing located just undernieth the plastic cap on the center pully. Many people are thrown off thinking a transmission problem when it's actually this thrust bearing kit. However, it could be the trans. If so you have a 5 year warranty on it, part only. There is also a number of service flashes on this model including: snubber kit, flash number 26-756, which has to do with vibration during spin. Things you want to make sure of is that the pump is not seized up, leakage from the center tub on to the bearing and brake. You may want to call Maytag and inquire about the service flashes on this model, you could be covered. Other than that my guess without seeing it would be the thrust bearing kit, part number 12500036. Not a bad job, the kit comes with instructions. The hardest part is getting that last washer on. SOURCE: Maytag washer will not spin

If your washer does everything but does not spin, it is your outlet filter which is blocked. Locate this and clean out, it has to work fine. Refer user's manual.

Your Thrust bearing on the bottom of the transmission is not releaseing the break. try turning the pulley with the belt off in the opposite direction this should free up your break. If it doesn't replace your brake ststor and rotor as well as your thrust bearing. This should solve your problem. Roger

SOURCE: Maytag Performa PAV2300AWW screaching noise, belt problem, pulley broke

My Maytag Performa was making the loud squealing noise. I changed out the water pump/bearing, took care of the problem.
Putting a new belt on just help burn up the bearing (they needed replacing) and probably ruined the new belt. Probably seized the water pump bearing and the belt jumped and broke the motor pully. A washing machine motor is very strong, when that h20 pump bearing seized (or possibly some bearings jamed up) the motor kept on turning that belt and the plastic pully gave in. You'll need to replace that also. If the h20 pumb bearing is turning freely, likely the bearings jammed up but or now loose. That bearing should be tight, no slack or play in it. You can probably wobble the pully on it all around while turning it. The slightest slack is too much.

Will not agitate, motor runs ok and will spin dry ok.installed a slightly shorter drive belt on and it would agitate but not spin dry, I have a new bet kit ordered is there something else to check, th

see this causes and fix it. God bless you
First you will need to identify if you have a direct drive type or a belt drive. The later is obvious if you have belts under your machine it is a belt drive, if not it is a direct drive. Also there are 2 basic agitator types with some variances among them. The 2 piece and the single.

Agitator Dogs
The agitator dogs are in the 2 piece type of agitator. These wear out over time. They also break and can cause noise. To inspect and replace the agitaor dogs follow video.

Agitator Coupling / Spline
The other type depending on age of your machine use a spline. Newer GE types have a coupling that gets stripped out and the older GE type has a spline directly on the agitater that gets stripped out. You will need to remove the agitator. The dispenser usually pulls right out. This will give you access to the bolt that holds the agitater down. Remove the bolt, then place your fingers under the agitator and pull up. This can take some force. A belt slid under the agitater can also work. Once off you will see if it is stripped or not.

Belt
If your washer is a belt drive type make sure the belt is tight. Check for black soot from belt wear. Replace if it has excessive wear or broke.

Motor Coupler
This is a fairly common problem with direct drive machines but inexpensive and easy to replace. The Motor Coupler transfers power from the motor to the transmission. The following video will walk you through the replacement of the Motor Coupler.

Transmission
The transmission does not usually fail. To check this on a direct drive remove the motor and then turn tub inside. If it spins freely with no noise the problem is elsewhere. If it is noisy it needs replacing this is expensive and depending on the age of your machine you may not want to replace it. On a belt drive remove the belts and spin tub.

Loud noise sometimes, cant manually rotate tub with my hands yet the wheel below seems to move easily, lots of black powder around base of transmission, and is it common to have a blue sealant applied...

the black powder is from the belts, you could be overloading the washer and the belts are slipping or something is jamming up and burning out the belts

Machine will not agitate or spin. Found black powder under washer, as well as small plastic broken pieces.

If the washer will fill and drain, but won't agitate or spin, you may have a broken motor coupling. The noise of the motor engaging, lack of agitation and ability to still drain are the usual symptoms. The black powder and broken plastic pieces under the washer are also common symptoms. This is a common fail item with this model washer through normal wear and tear. Newer versions of the coupler are more resilient and resist breaking. The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the transmission and takes the place of a drive belt. This configuration is known as a "direct-drive" system. They do wear out and can break. The replacement part number is included in the link I provided and is an improved upgraded coupling that is more resilient. It should last longer. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

A replacement coupler can be purchased on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11. Just use the part number in the link and "Search by Part Number" for your search criteria.

If you have any questions about this repair, please post back with your complete model number so that I may be able to provide you with better assistance. I hope this helps you.

Whirpool washer, only number on the back is 3357976

sounds like i could be a bad coupling, most whirlpool washers are direct drive so there is not a belt, there is however a linkage between the motor and transmission. Pull the machine out and tilt it back. check on the floor directly beneath the washer for a pile of blck dust (this can be an idication of a bad coupler) make sure you wedge something underneath it so it dont fall on you while working on it. remove the pump by levering off the 2 clips, push the pump aside then remove the 2 screws holding the motor clips...remove the wire harness on the motor and then remove the 2 clips holding the motor in plce with a screw driver. now you should be able to drop the motor out...the coupling is the tripod shaped plastic attached to the motor and another to the transmission, they have a black round rubber linkage with 6 holes...examine this for damage and replace if damaged. re-assemble washer in reverse order.

sounds like you have a bad transmission. can you lift the top up so you can see what it is doing when it is trying to spin. does it adgetate and spin at the same time? If yes you have a bad transmission. also if you get 2 people one looking inside of the drum and the other turning the big pulley in one direction it should turn the whole drum in the other the agetator should go back and forth. Tell me what happens thanks.

Belt installation

repacing the belt on a neptune is simple. unplug the unit and move it away from the wall.. now remove the 4 screws holding the access panel in place. loop the belt over the end of the motor shaft so that the grooved side of the belt catches the grooves on the shaft. now simply feed it around the tub pulley. if you find the belt keeps coming off you might have a bearing problem tht has caused the tub to shift. look for fine plastic powder, almost dust like, that would be the pulley eating into the back of the tub
