Question about Microtek ScanMaker X6EL Flatbed Scanner
The label just says X6, not EL, if that makes a difference. I am trying to set this scanner up with my Dell and Windows XP. I connected it to the printer parallel port as the instructions say, but the computer won't recognize that is it there. After installing the software, the "test connection" says there is no connection. I know it's an old scanner, but I don't want to buy a new one right now. Any suggestions?
Hi, Based on your post/description, I will assume that your scanner then is X6 EPP and that: 1. you have the original CD installer or downloaded the 3 .exe files from http://support.microtek.com/downloads/drv_specific.phtml?cnntn=a&x=21&y=20&slct_os=8&step=2&prod=87&bymdlnme=1&drvgrp=87 2. you followed the instruction in your manual or at http://support.microtek.com/tech_faqs_stp.phtml?request=FAQ-PCDI&point=KB-00003#stepbystep and still "...the "test connection" says there is no connection..." A possible workaround: Power off and reboot, on restart hit del, F2 or whatever it is that will allow you to go to BIOS. In the BIOS setup, look for the "Parallel Port Mode", you might have several choices are ECP, SPP, EPP, ECP + EPP; select EPP, save, exit, reboot. Try your scanner. If this doesn't work, try the ECP + EPP or the others (might as well). If still a no go, double check that you have the right drivers for the right Windows. Hope this be of help/idea. Post back how things are or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.

Tips for a great answer:

You can download the drivers from Dell WEB site, the
support download page. Make sure you select your model desktop or laptop,
better still, type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on the
bottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Tag
label is missing then go into the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages,
the Service Tag number will be displayed). This will open the page where the
specific drivers for your model computer are located. Also make sure you select
the Windows XP or Vista version of the drivers for your Windows operating
system. Click on this link to download the drivers: -
