The label just says X6, not EL, if that makes a difference. I am trying to set this scanner up with my Dell and Windows XP. I connected it to the printer parallel port as the instructions say, but the computer won't recognize that is it there. After installing the software, the "test connection" says there is no connection. I know it's an old scanner, but I don't want to buy a new one right now. Any suggestions?

Re: Connecting a scanner
Based on your post/description, I will assume that your scanner then is X6 EPP and that:
1. you have the original CD installer or downloaded the 3 .exe files from http://support.microtek.com/downloads/drv_specific.phtml?cnntn=a&x=21&y=20&slct_os=8&step=2&prod=87&bymdlnme=1&drvgrp=87
2. you followed the instruction in your manual or at http://support.microtek.com/tech_faqs_stp.phtml?request=FAQ-PCDI&point=KB-00003#stepbystep
and still "...the "test connection" says there is no connection..."
A possible workaround:
Power off and reboot, on restart hit del, F2 or whatever it is that will allow you to go to BIOS.
In the BIOS setup, look for the "Parallel Port Mode", you might have several choices are ECP, SPP, EPP, ECP + EPP; select EPP, save, exit, reboot. Try your scanner. If this doesn't work, try the ECP + EPP or the others (might as well).
If still a no go, double check that you have the right drivers for the right Windows.
Hope this be of help/idea. Post back how things are or should you need further information.
Good luck and kind regards.

I have a Umax astra 2200 scanner that I was running on a Windows 98 machine and I was very happy with it. Unfortunately I now own a Dell Dimension E310 with Windows XP and I cannot get the scanner to install/operate properly. Is appears from the specs that the scanner is not compatable with Windows XP, but is there any software upgrade I can download so that I continue to use this scanner with XP?
hi I from Chile and the solution I write in Español
If this scanner was previously used on a Win95/8/ME system the likely hood of it working with and NTFS[3000/XP] system is slim.
This is because the two system work in different ways and the scanner design for 95/8 does not recognise commands from a NTFS computer.
Two thing to try
Go to Mt computer/Help/Compatibility and read it up.
then right click on the scanner software and click on properties/compatibility and set it to Win98- see what happens
You could checkout ACER for driver updates also.
But don't hold your breath
A Scanner this old is not likely to work with a computer that is current.
You did not say if you have the driver disk to try.
If you have and have loaded the MiraScan software, right click on the program icon and click on properties then campatability and set to run as W98 and see what happens
You will not find driver for this one now.
I assume you are running XP or 2000
This scanner designed to run with W95/98 is not compatible with modern NTFS systems.
