Takes 6-8 pulls of the pull cord to start only when cold.How can I improve on that?Everything else is great

there should be four bolts holding the cover on that houses the pull cord assembly take the bolts out look inside you should see the rest of the broken cord at the other end there is a spool that the cord rolls up in to pull the cord until it stops the other end of the cord is a not in the cord pull on the knot the broken peice should come out turn the spool 2 times in the direction that is against the pressre while holding the spool in place feed the new cord in through the whole that you pulled the broken cord out of then tie the cord in a knot wind the rest of the cord up then feed the other end of the cord through the new pull handle tie the cord in a knot put the housing back on

Try buying a new plug first but if it continues then I would say that there is debris in the carb.

make sure nothing is jammed around the blades...if thats ok, remove the pull cord housing and try and spin the engine. if it doesnt turn, the motor is locked up and needs repaired

This sounds like you have bent the shaft. This happens when you run over something hard. Hope this will help.

Jump the solinoid with a screw driver, it the engine starts, replace the solenoid.

Mitox 28lhr long hedge trimmer does not start properly. It takes at least 50 pulls of the start cord before it starts. I've changed the spark plug but to no avail. Any advice on how to help it start
  1. Switch machine to On position.
  2. Switch choke to full.
  3. Pump the primer bulb 5 or 6 times to prime the carb.
  4. Lock the throttle on with the throttle switch.
  5. Pull over until engine fires. (it may only be a quick pop)
  6. Switch to half choke.
  7. Pull over until engine starts and runs.

    Also check the air filter is clean and the fuel filter is good.

Toro 6.75 149cc pull cord has to be pulled 6-8 times to start a cold engine.After that not a problem.How can I improve this?
Winter methanol fuel is problematic for small engine.
Add small amount of methanol will help.

Check the manufacture spec for the gap and re-gap it to the min. gap to get the strongest spark.

Husqvarna 236 brand new will not start
1. Make sure you have used the correct fuel to oil mix in the tank.
2. Set on/off switch to ON position.
3. Pull out the choke switch to (full choke position)
4. Prime the carb by pumping the primer bulb on the carb until fuel fills the bulb.
5. Pull over saw until the saw fires.
6. Push in the choke switch.
7. Pull over and the saw should start.

My 1988 ( i think) 6hp Johnson outboard motor is always hard to start if it is cold. It can take 10 - 15 minutes of pulling on the cord to start it when cold but will start first go every time once it has...
I would suggest you replace the 2 coils. Also, is choke closing properly? The carb if never rebuilt, could cause this problem. A carb kit and 2 coils should not cost much, maybe 20 each for coils and 17 for carb kit. Make sure carb is adjusted properly with outboard in water and warmed up. Mixture screw should be turned in slowly clockwise until engine just pops(lean). Then slowly open it apprx. 1/8 turn. This will aid engine in starting next time. Also, make sure primer bulb firms up when squeezed.

I have the homelite Vac Attack 2, i'm having trouble starting it, i prime it the desired 7 times (actually more) but i just sit there and pull, and pull, and pull the cord....really getting frustrated!

Fouled spark plug
ie, carbon and or fuel fouled
install new plug, and withouth choking or priming, pull 4-6 times while holding the throttle at wide open.

If not fouled, go to senerio #2

Fuel starvation - 'lean fuel' condition
Basic things to check:
1) spark plug
2) spark arrestor in muffler
3) fuel lines and tank filter
4) turn adjustment needles out (counterclockwise) 1/4 to 1/2 turn
*if all of the above are OK and/or do not improve performance then:
Remove Carburetor
5) replace gaskets/diaphragms
b) use a spray carb cleaner to clean jets, holes, and body of carb

Most of the small outdoor power equipment that I have used takes the following to start:

1. Prime 6-8 times, or whatever the manual calls for.

2. Choke the carb to full choke.

3. Pull starter rope. It may sputter and die.

4. After it sputters and dies, put the choke on 1/2. Pull a time or 2 more and should start. Run like that 10 seconds or so, then take choke all the way off.

sounds like the throttle cable has slipped on the side of the engine if they dont pull the choke all the way on they wont start too well. one way to find out is take your air cleaner and outer cover off so you can see in the front of the carby the put your throttle on start/choke position the choke butterfly should be closed if not check your cable.

Will not start - brand new
i bought a new dirtbike as a kid n same thing.it turned out ,it needed to be a synthedic oil in the mix.try seeing for spark to begin with by putting sparkplug in the wire n touching diode to the engine block while pulling the cord.thats a good starting point to diagnosing your problem.maybe try warming it up in the house then try starting it with no choke needed.the saws i ve used needed you to give it throttle after you pull,n no throttle with choke.

I also tried this.

  1. Clean the carb wire gauze air filter behind the roto-choke knob. (undo the nut/washers & long bolt)
  2. Deteremine if fuel is being fed to cylinder - Fully depress & prime the bulb about 7 times, turn to full choke. Pull start cord about 7 times. Remove spark plug see/smell fuel fumes/vapour present in cylinder
  3. Determine if compression is weak - remove plug, put finger over plug port, pull start cord. Should be evident of resistance/pressure build up when cord is pulled.
  4. Of course brand new plug!!! as above (I would try this first)

I have a Toro Timecutter 74330 with a briggs and stratton engine 286H77 0165 E1 030305ZA. Not starting I have a Toro Timecutter 74330 with a briggs and stratton engine 286H77 0165 E1 030305ZA. It was not charging the battery so I took the flywheel off and replaced the stator. I also replaced the fuel lines and filter from the tank to the carb since the lines were cracked on the outside. After those repairs I got the mower started once and it was charging the battery but when I engaged the blades it died like it did not have enough power. After that it started twice on half throttle but died. Since then it has not started. I took the carb off, cleaned it, replaced the needle and seat but still not luck starting. It is cranking but no ignition. I tried starter fuid. Still no ignition. Replaced the spark plug and it is getting a spark in an in-line spark plug tester. Tested the compression and it is at 105-110. Any suggestions? Thanks
