Open the top of the vacuum. remove ONLY the filter element. There should be a ball about a two inch diameter inside the cage. It's purpose is to shut off the vacuum flow when water reaches a high in the canister.

Bought house. Inherited shop/vac. A bit old, but

If you are going to use the wet vac to remove water, be sure to remove the bag inside the canister first. Also, some wet vacs have an internal float that has to be installed, but that may not be the case with yours.

I have lost my owner's manual for my shop vac and need to figure out how to set it up so I can pump out my flooded basement using a garden hose.
Is there anywhere I can find an owner's manual on line??
The model stated on my vac is not what I clicked on your site....my vac states:
Model QPV 10.5
