Is that a 7000 series if so I'm looking at one right now ; looks like you might have to drill out the rivets they made these to use and not fix or get a user friendly case transfer over its easer $50. or so w/power supply

Hello again, Perhaps I should have stated that this system was bought back in the late 90's, and that I have already been to the compaq site, with no luck there, because the step-by-step guide you mention, shows a newer tower. This tower I am dealing with is a mini tower, and like I said before. I was able to get the 2 screws out on the side that is open when you remove the cover off of the tower, but I can not get to the 2 screws that are on the motherboard side. There are no holes on the side of the motherboard side, to even try to put a screwdriver thru there to remove these 2 screws. I know all this seems stupid, and trust me. I have been inside many towers, removed several drives, etc. and never before have I run across this. Perhaps it is because I have never owned a Compaq, and now by looking at this one, probably never will. So once again, thank you for help, but I still need further assistance.

Take off the other side panel and you should be able to get at the screws. Also, Compaq has a handy step-by step guide with animations to help.

You can fit any CD/ DVD rom to your PC. If the front of the PC has a moulded front, where the flat CDrom front does not appear to fit, the plastic front on the CDrom is held in place with 4 plastci clips and that can be popped off easily.

follow these instruction exactly . this will work

If you get the "NTLDR is Missing" error, follow these instructions:

1. Load Windows XP CD into CD drive.
2. Make sure BIOS is set to boot to CD drive.
press F8 or F11 to get into BIOS
3. Boot the computer from CD.
4. At menu, press "R" to load Recovery Console.
5. Select the installation to be fixed.
*The following instructions assume CD-ROM is labeled as drive D and the hard drive partition the windows installation is on is labeled as drive C. Replace the letters accordingly.
6. Type "COPY D:\i386\ntldr C:\" and press ENTER.
7. Type "COPY D:\i386\ C:\" and press ENTER.
8. Remove CD and type "EXIT" and press ENTER (to reboot your computer).

Hello i have a compaq presario 5000 when i turn

This is a compicated problem. First when it boots enter setup by pressing the F10. Once you are in set up reset all settings to default. Save changes and exit CMOS. If that does not help the situation have someone make you a boot disk, reenter setup and put the floppy as the first boot drive and then CDrom. Insert the boot disk, follow the instructions to boot. Once you are up and running try to roll back the computer to the last recovery point that worked. If that does not work you may need to see a local repair tech.

Cannot boot up in cd drive and will not boot up in ms-dos

You should set your boot up sequence to boot up first in cdrom in bios settings. Then load a bootable cdrom in your drive before booting up.

If this doesn't happen, cd disk non bootable or drive defective.

I need to replace my ide drive on my compaq presario 5000 but i cant seem to locate it could you help me out?

ON the 5000 series there are two possibly three ide drives on the machine. Once you have the front bezel off, and the remove the side panel, you will find near the top of the machine the ide cdrom drive, and possible another cdrom or tape backup ide drive. Below those one or two drives is your hard drive (ide). To remove them, you will need to unplug the power cable, which is the white plastic plug with the multiple color wires going into it. Then remove the grey wide cable which is your ide cable. Do not remove the other end of the cable from the motherboard. Remove which every ide drive you want to replace and install the new one, and be sure to hook up the ide cable and power supply back into the same positions as before.

Compaq Presario V6000

It actually sounds like you might have a hardware problem. If you're comfortable with opening the computer, remove any recently added hardware. If no hardware was added, then it may be necessary to remove each of the components in the following order and retest the boot process until it functions, and replace the last part removed.

Pressing F8 and/or reading the CDROM that early in the BOOT sequence is not possible, so it's in a hardware check.

Floppy, CDROM, SoundCard, Network Card, <any other cards>, extra RAM, except one or two to be able to boot.

It is also possible that either internally or externally, a cable may be loose. If you are able reseat all the cables, this may make it work. Stuff can come loose and the computer freaks out.

Lastly, if you feel like making sure that component is the problem, start plugging all pieces back in and all may work. This would mean that something was loose.
