SOURCE: My 22" MTD Yardman push

These inexpensive mowers are not made for large scale mowing. They're set to run as fast as they do and have low compression (read that as low power also) to make them easy to start and operate. About the only thing you can do to make it work better is keep the air cleaner clean, use fresh gas and keep the blade sharp so it cuts the grass easier. Mowing more often also means less cuttings under the deck so it works more efficently.

SOURCE: 07 mtd yardsman mower with 13.5 tecumseh runs great untill engage mower , then dies down and blows black smoke

This sounds like a micro switch acting up, the first switch to check is the seat switch, make sure the block connecter is pushed fully home on the switch ( there is often a fail safe inside the connecter should the block come away from the switch )

Lawn mower ran out of oil and stopped running put new oil in and still not running is there something to do after putting oil in to make it run

If you can turn blade by hand first removing spark plug you then can try squirting 30w oil into plug hole and turn blade by hand. replace plug and try to start. Depending on whether you gouged the cylinder it may start.

How do you check the oil in a Weed-Eater-500-Series Side Discharge Mower, Model 10854261. It has a basic Briggs Stratton engine. I have a lost the manual and cannot figure it out!! HELP!!!!

most mowers have a dip stick like a car and the oil should be changed often and acting as if it wants to stall try fresh fuel gas is only good for 30 days in small engines

Where is the oil plug for my 2004 MTD mower. Model no. 12A-998Q795

Hello, The 2004 MTD Pro walkbehind doesn't have an oil plug per say. I am guessing you wish to perform an oil change. The oil filler cap/tube assembly is also the drain, as is with many walk-behind mowers. ( Here's a link of the engine breakdown showing the parts: http://www.mowerpartsweb.com/MANUALS/HONDA/GCV160A.PDF )

Make sure the gas has been drained/run dry - this will prevent accidental spills during this proceedure. Next, for safety, disconnect the spark plug wire. At this point, I usually have a couple of blocks handy to place the side wheels ( the ones on the side with the oil dipstick ) On your model it should be the right hand side. just at the edge of the fan cover cowling. between the blocks, have a container ready to catch the oil, I use one of those square margarine tubs as the sides are low - but any suitable container will do. Bear in mind, it should hold about 1/2 to one litre of oil. Be carefull not to tip the machine with the spark plug down - this will cause the air filter to become contaminated and lead to poor starts or not at all. ( If this happens, replace the air filter.) Now jus tip so the spiggot is over the container and allow to drain. Tip back into normal upright position and fill to propper mark. Simple Tip: save any oil containers - they come in handy for the used oil and are easy to take to the hazardous waste disposal.

Hope it goes smoothly!

Mtd yard machine snowthrower not starting, doesn't sound even like it is firing, new gas, new plug, oil is full, emptied gas tank and ran dry before storing last year, blizzard tonight, help!

First spray a prime down the throat of the carb with the choke in the run position and attempt to start. If the motor hits and runs for a second then its a fuel related issue and you will need to remove and clean the carb. If it wont run or try to run on a prime then it may be an ignition issue. check for spark. If no spark then remove the ground wire from the module and check for spark again. If still no spark suspect the module, if spark with ground wire removed then wiring or switch is the culprit.

And make sure you dont over look little things like... does it have a fuel shut off valve and is it open? Is there a safety key and is it in -place? etc.

Mtd pro snow blower runs then die

it sounds to me like either the oil pressure switch is being plugged after startup and causint the engine to quit then the plug settles until you start it again and it plugs again easiest way to test is to take the swith and remove the wire to it and see if the engine starts and keeps running, if so then replace the old pressure switch. If this does not solve the problem then the only other thing I can think of is the needle valve is partially pluged, at startup the fuel bowl is full and the engine startsbut after starting the fuel bowl runs low on fuel as it is not filling fast enough and the engine stalls. By the time you try starting it again the fuel bowl is filled again and the whole thing starts all over. Hope This Helps Don

Cant get blades off

Clockwise, but you need a good impact, or you'll have to give the wrench a good whack (which isn't a good idea). It's best to lock the blade down so it can't come around and cut you. Also, it's a very good idea to remove the spark plug wire.
