Depending on your PC Make and Model you may be able to enter BIOS setup on boot and check in there, it should show you under one of the hardware or hard drive categories which one is failing?
Let us know how it goes? If no luck there Post Make and Model and we can give more accurate information about your system and how to determine which one it is other than unplugging one at a time and starting your computer over and try another one and keep on until you don't get the S.M.A.R.T. Let us know how it goes? If no love, give us the information on your system and we will try and nail it down for you.

SMART is a Hard drive checking system on the motherboard. If the indication is coming up you should save everything you want and replace the hard drive, because it is going to fail sooner rather than later. Good luck.

Smart status is bad on my asus laptop

The smart test is used to evaluate the hard drive, if test indicates bad hardware, I recommend you back up your hard drive so valuable information is not lost and replace the hardware down the road.

3rd master hard disk:S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD, BACKUP, and Replace

S.M.A.R.T. is a way to tell if your hard drive is going to die soon. Since it says BAD, it means the hard drive is going to die soon so you should backup all your data and then replace the hard drive with a new one or a working one that isn't dying.

Reset factory default HP Mini 1035NR PC Notebook

SMART measures physical attributes of the hard drive. Reformatting won't help that. A bad SMART status alone doesn't mean your drive is failing, but combined with the delayed writing failures and the slow speed, I'd replace it ASAP.

Disk error searching for boot rercord from CDROM not found

Hi rmirish,

The hard drive has built in SMART diagnostics to check itself to make sure all is well. If the SMART is showing status BAD then the hard drive is either either starting to go out. Your best bet is to try to backup any data (if you have any) on the hard drive and replace the hard drive.

Hope that helps,

Take care,
