Craftsman 917.255981 when I turn the wheel to the right it makes a noise and seems to lock in place and its hard to get it lose again.

Anti-lock function on brakes is triggered by applying brakes while steering wheel is turned hard over


Sounds like you are losing wheel speed signal when under hard turns. This is commonly caused by the harness at or near the wheel speed sensor has a bad connection of there may be a break in the wiring that intermittently loses signal to the ABS module and causes the anti-lock function to happen, (loss of wheel speed is like wheel skid as far as the ABS module is concerned) It is usually necessary to have a scan tool to monitor the data and read codes on the ABS system. You may have to take vehicle to shop that is capable of diagnosing the problem.

Key ignition wont turn


APPLY BRAKE AND MAKE SURE STEERING WHEEL IS CENTERED. IF IT IS PARKED SO THERE IS PRESSURE ON THE FRONT WHEELS AND HOLDING THE STEERING WHEEL HARD RIGHT OR LEFT IT WILL MAKE THE KEY VERY HARD TO TURN.

Another problem is the CV universal joint going to the wheel. this is inside a rubber boot to protect the constant velocity universal joint and maybe the boot has been damaged and allowed water/dirt inside. Find a large open parking lot and make a tight figure eight with the steering wheel all the way over and listen to see if the noise is louder. locking the steering wheel hard over turning left and then hard over turning right and if the noise is louder then your CV joint is bad. A squealing scraping noise could be worn out brake pads allowing the small L shaped metal tab to rub on the brake rotor causing the noise too. Look at the pad, the should be very thick riding against the brake rotor. You should be able to see the L bracket and if it is against the brake rotor, new brake pads are needed. A grinding kind of noise that changes its sound when you make small turns like avoiding pot holes could be coming from a bad wheel bearing. Jack that wheel off the ground and then grab the top and bottom of the tire and see if it wiggles on the axel. There should be no play at all if the wheel bearing is good. Regards, Dennis

Depends on what the noise sounds like. Some noise can be normal if you are holding the steering wheel at full lock . That is the pressure from the pump pushing hydraulic fluid through the steering box. If it is usually loud at the slightest turn..could be bad steering pump , leaking hose, leaking seal at steering box, even a bad belt.

2008 Jeep Patriot. Engine makes rattling/grinding noise near right wheel well when making a right turn. This problem started when the weather hit about 20 degrees.


sounds like a wheel bearing,one piece hub and bearing,not a hard fix ,bearing is like 100 bucks tho. Don't let it get worse,the wheel could lock up

Why won't my ignition key turn over and my steering wheel is locked in place at the sametime?


I'm assuming you mean your key wont turn in the ignition. first off check to make sure the car is in park. then what you gotta do is put in the key and put a little pressure as if turning but dont turn too hard, then even though the steering wheel is locked you will have to try to move it a little, if you parked with your tires turned then you will want to try to turn the wheel in the same direction, (even locked you should be able to move it about a half inch) you will have to turn the wheel hard but it should move enough to allow the key to turn, you may have to jiggle the key a little in the ignition but it should eventually turn, just remember not to try turning the key too hard, the extra force wont make it go but can cause the key to break. this tends to happen when you turn the car off andthe steering wheel gets locked if the wheels are turned hard in either direction. also if multiple attempts at this still dont work, try taking the key out and turning it over and trying again. Even though both sides of the key are identicle, because of wear on the key and the ignition, sometimes when the wheel locks the ignition, it will only turn if the key is put in a certain way. Craftsman Lawn tractor - When turning to the left the Left front wheel turns much farther then the right front wheel does on a hard right turn. Almost perpendicular to the tractor. Busings are brand new....


I've noticed this on other Craftsman and MTD mowers. The ones with the one main steering rod from the steering wheel to the left wheel and a connecting rod from the left wheel to the right wheel. I think that since we are advised to mow in a counter-clockwise direction, they design the mowers to turn tighter towards the left. It's in the design just like you suspected.

Left turns sometimes makes knockin noise seems left front, i see that the outside of that tire is worn too. I had front brakes/rotors replaced and seems since then it was happenin but not always


Could also be the upper ball joint, put a jack under the lower control arm and jack the left wheel off the ground, the trick is to try to get it at normal ride hight, grab the tire at the top and bottom and try to push and pull the top in and out inline with the ball joint. have a helper eye the ball joint and see if there is any motion(play) at the joint. If not, check the bottom the same way. if they are both good, try it side to side to check the tie rods for play, make sure the steering wheel is locked. if all checks good than it is probably the cv joint if the truck is four wheel drive, if it is not four wheel drive it's definately is not a cv joint because you don't have them. For the four wheel drive model, go to a large parking lot, put the truck in a tight left turn, this will stress the cv joint, making it click, you will hear the noise from the side with the bad joint. Then tru a hard right turn, then do the same things again, this time driving in reverse. How do I release the lock on my Craftsman belt sander to lighten the belt. It's an old Model # 315.1172


I checked Searspartsdirect.com for that model number and they listed that number, but with an extra 0 at the right end. I couldn't find a belt release lever illustrated anywhere like that on my old Craftsman belt sander. On mine, you just flipped the lever either forward or back to release and tighten the belt. (still works great) There is a spring that pushes the front roller assembly forward when the lever is operated.
