Its a huge posibility that the drivers you are currently using is not compatible with the device. There are many reasons for the same:
Note: Make sure you download the drivers based on the operating system installed on your computer (like Windows XP, Vista, etc)

Try to change the usb cable and check again, if it works. If it has same problem, then i recommed you to install the printer driver again. Uninstall the older one and run your printer driver. Print test page, also check you memory card, if it has protect switch on ON mode. I hope these will help you a bit, if not certisfied, please contact your nearest HP outlet for more assistance.
