At this age, the engine will have points under the flywheel. If the coil is OUTSIDE the flywheel, forget fixing it and just replace the coil with a later solid state unit, then cut the points wire.

If the coil is UNDER the flywheel with the points, you'll have to stick with them, but replace them AND the condenser. These parts (and replacement coils) are still available, but decide quickly - Tecumseh have gone, and when all these old parts are used up, that's it.

It is a fuel cutoff solinoid, backfire prevention solinoid. If it fails then you will get no gas into carburetor. If you turn the key from off to run and it clicks then it is working, if it does not click then there is a problem.
