HotpointIs it hard to replace some of the freon in a hotpoint frige? We had a huge power surge and the frige smelt of freon after I yanked the plug. But after I pluged it back in it is now running fine and getting cold. The freezer (on top)is even freezing again but I have it past the middle setting so I know all it need's is some of the freon replaced. If I get a kit from a parts supply place is it hard to do? I dont have the money to pay someone to do it for me and I dont have the money to buy a new one. Even a used one is $100.00 and it would be my luck it would break down as soon as the 30 day warenty is over.
I replaced leaking evaporator coil in this video and charged it with freon R134a
Well if you get another one my advice is to stay away form G.E. which hotpoint is G.E. ... Also sxs's are having quit a lot of problems.. seemes like thats all I'm working on anymore... More G.E.'s than anything else.. Good luck
The only time u need to add freon is IF you have a leak... I dont see anyway a power surge could cause loss of freon. Not sure what u smelled but I dont think it was freon. I wouldnt mess with opening you Refrigersnt system ... If you do need freon... means u have a leak.. depending on how bad the leak is ..This will be how long u got before you have to add again.. No guarantee how long it would last 2 days, a week, a month???
Check to see if u have any frost build up on the back panel in the freezer,
check your condenser coils make sure no dust blockage, make sure fan in back by compressior and freezer fan is blowing... make sure u havnt turned your freezer control up cutting cooling to your refrigerator side. should be about half way
ps all fans should be blowing when refrigerator is running
Well I sure am glad every thing worked out for you .. good luck and god bless

I couldnt figure out how it was getting cold if the freon leaked out. It didnt make sense. I dont know what it was either but we thought it was freon because it isnt staying as cold as it used to. My husband took the back off and cleaned the fan and stuff but it still isnt as cold as it was. I have it turned up to full nd it is getting cold and even freezing in the freezer section on top but ... I guess we will have to come up with the money for a good used one.
We did all that except for the control nob thing so I will check that now. If all else fails I guess I have no choice but to get a new (used) one. Thanks everyone for the help I'll let you know if turning the nob fix's it.
Thank's a lot. I'll just have to stick it out for a little bit more. Our son just started college and he got a lot of scholarships but we had to pay for some of his text book's and WOW are they exspensive!!! At least it dose get a chill and we still have our chest freezer for ice to help. Thank You to everyone for the help.:)
Well when we had the cover off in the freezer section of the thing and the fan wasnt spinning= at all. So my husband and I had a small heated discussion about it spinning and how it could turn so there was nothing wrong with it and the fact that it used to spin. BUT to cut a long story short the fan was burned out. It cost us $61.65 to get a new one but that is still cheeper then a new or used frige. The bad thing is that it was given to us by the owners of the apt. complex we moved out of and the maintenance had been up to repair it at least 6 times because the coils kept freezing over. So he would come up and put a hair drier on it and say "there ya go" and it would freeze up again in a few days. So the guy at the appliance parts place said that it was probobly the fan the whole time. That power surge was a blessing in disguise. Our electric wireing got straightened out, the frig got fixed, my hubby put in some new outlets while he was fxing the wireing AND I got to meet you guy's who have been so nice and helpfull.
Thank You all so much for all the help.
