How to replace the freon in a hotpoint refrigerator

HotpointIs it hard to replace some of the freon in a hotpoint frige? We had a huge power surge and the frige smelt of freon after I yanked the plug. But after I pluged it back in it is now running fine and getting cold. The freezer (on top)is even freezing again but I have it past the middle setting so I know all it need's is some of the freon replaced. If I get a kit from a parts supply place is it hard to do? I dont have the money to pay someone to do it for me and I dont have the money to buy a new one. Even a used one is $100.00 and it would be my luck it would break down as soon as the 30 day warenty is over.

I couldnt figure out how it was getting cold if the freon leaked out. It didnt make sense. I dont know what it was either but we thought it was freon because it isnt staying as cold as it used to. My husband took the back off and cleaned the fan and stuff but it still isnt as cold as it was. I have it turned up to full nd it is getting cold and even freezing in the freezer section on top but ... I guess we will have to come up with the money for a good used one.

We did all that except for the control nob thing so I will check that now. If all else fails I guess I have no choice but to get a new (used) one. Thanks everyone for the help I'll let you know if turning the nob fix's it.

Thank's a lot. I'll just have to stick it out for a little bit more. Our son just started college and he got a lot of scholarships but we had to pay for some of his text book's and WOW are they exspensive!!! At least it dose get a chill and we still have our chest freezer for ice to help. Thank You to everyone for the help.:)

Well when we had the cover off in the freezer section of the thing and the fan wasnt spinning= at all. So my husband and I had a small heated discussion about it spinning and how it could turn so there was nothing wrong with it and the fact that it used to spin. BUT to cut a long story short the fan was burned out. It cost us $61.65 to get a new one but that is still cheeper then a new or used frige. The bad thing is that it was given to us by the owners of the apt. complex we moved out of and the maintenance had been up to repair it at least 6 times because the coils kept freezing over. So he would come up and put a hair drier on it and say "there ya go" and it would freeze up again in a few days. So the guy at the appliance parts place said that it was probobly the fan the whole time. That power surge was a blessing in disguise. Our electric wireing got straightened out, the frig got fixed, my hubby put in some new outlets while he was fxing the wireing AND I got to meet you guy's who have been so nice and helpfull.
Thank You all so much for all the help.

The only time u need to add freon is IF you have a leak... I dont see anyway a power surge could cause loss of freon. Not sure what u smelled but I dont think it was freon. I wouldnt mess with opening you Refrigersnt system ... If you do need freon... means u have a leak.. depending on how bad the leak is ..This will be how long u got before you have to add again.. No guarantee how long it would last 2 days, a week, a month???

Check to see if u have any frost build up on the back panel in the freezer,

check your condenser coils make sure no dust blockage, make sure fan in back by compressior and freezer fan is blowing... make sure u havnt turned your freezer control up cutting cooling to your refrigerator side. should be about half way

I have a coldspot side by side refrigerator the compresor works but getting hot is there a leak smells like a dead rat is that the freon leaking i tured the frige on its side and looked like it was leaking...

Hi,

Refrigerant has tha oil in it to provide lubrication for the compressor. If you are seeing oil on the tubing, you may be losing refrigerant. Freon has a sweet smell, so it doesn't sound like the odor you're getting is that. A tiny leak would be extremely hard to smell. It will take an appliance company service call to repair your leak and replentish your freon. You'll have to do the math to figure out if you want to keep or replace it.
Best regards, and good luck,

Freezer work's excellent,, but fridge part is getting warmer every day now and will soon not be able to keep food cool. Have freezer set at D and E is coldest.... have frige set at 9 coldest setting but...

The freezer plates are the first to get the dwindling freon an dthat will remain the coldest. Find the leak and have it repaired (not just refilled or you will be here again in a few days!

GE HotPoint HSS25 not cooling, but interior lights are on

video on troubleshooting

if after you try the things on the video you may have to replace the motherboard. you can reset the frige by unplugin the power and pluging it back in. If you decide not to replace the motherboard as the unit will work fine untill you press the dispencer i reccomend unplugging the dispenser unit at the top of the freezer door so the frige will not accidently shut down just unplug the connector leading down the door. your frige will work fine without this connection just no water or ice at the door. If your frige is still under waranty (1year parts& labor) call them up and they will fix it.
The motherboard on this frige seems to be sensitive to surges and the transformer for the ice/water dispensencer goes bad. repacing the motherboard corrects this problem they cost about $75 to $90 on the appliance websites to install the new one it is very easy and you need to unplug your fridge and pull the metal cover off the back of the unit by removing four screws. the cables are all different size and can not be pluged in wrong the replacement board should come with instructions. to remove the board you may need needle nose pliers to push in the tabbs on the white board standoffs it should take about 10-15 minutes

I have solved this problem by replacing the back board if you have any questions I can help out
