lift your seat and look at the label that you got your model number from. to the right of the model number is the serial number. the first six digits of the serial number is the date your tractor was made - for example: serial no. 060802D002756 would make the unit made June 8, 2002

I have a Sears 17.5 hp lawn tractor with a Briggs & Stratton engine. Recently the engine has consistently shown low rpms when placing it in gear, and then slowing to a crawl when turning on the mowing...

Sounds like maybe there is a physical restriction at the belt-driven implements. ie. - the blades may have too much cut grass plugging in around them. this is common after cutting wet grass and allowing it to dry and plug the housing of the mower deck. Then check for cuttings ontop of the mower deck where the belts turn. Look for the obvious stick or piece of material stuck in the main drive belt pulley off the motor/ You said the motor revs up normally when in neutral so I'm quite certain that the engine is running propoerly - at least without a load on it. Stupid question, but is there enough oil in the crankcase? Can you check the dipstick please? Thanks and good luck - seems to be an exterior problem to the machine - something stuck in the belts / drive areas. Check them out real good before getting crazy.

Craftsman 42 inch deck mower. Model 917.277611 (2007). LT1000. 16.5hp Briggs & Stratton. Springs on cutter deck assembly broke. Had to re-assemble cutter deck. Re-attached springs and tension arms....

That model number des not show up as a good number on the http://www.searspartsdirect.com site. Are you sure you have the belts on correctly? If it has 2 belts on the deck & 1 is not installed correctly they work against each other. Safely make sure that each blade will turn by hand. did you take the blades off? If they are too long by just a fraction, they will hit ach other, but that usually makes quiet a noise. Get your book out & systematically go over everything you touched or changed. It sounds like something really simple you have overlooked. you can go to http://www.searspartsdirect.com & enter a good model number & view all of the parts diagrams. Sometimes they are a big help, & at other times they just confuse you more:). Let me know what you find!!
