Bass sounds muddy and volume is minimum.

I have two solobaric L7-15'' speakers and a kicker kx1200.1 D-class amplifier. At lower volumes it sounds pretty good, but once I start adding volume, the bass sounds really muddy. I can adjust the bass somewhat with the provided bass control knob, but its just not what I'm used to. I got better sound from two kicker comps connected to two cheap sony 1000 watt amps. I had one sony amp bridged connected to each 15'' kicker comp. Unbelievably, I kicked ***** of a lot of greater systems!!! The bass was hard and tight and I could feel the bass mule kicking me in the back. Now with better equipment, I get about a little less than half of what I had. I have this installed in a Mercedes Benz E430. My head unit is a Pioneer AVH-P4900DV and I also have a 1.5 farad capacitor. Oh, the L7's are in a ported box, but the comps were in a sealed box. I've always been a sealed box guy, but I let the guys at the install shop convince me that a vented box would produce more and lower bass, but no such luck and I'm greatly disappointed!!! Please help me find a solution. Lastly, my solobarics are dual 4 ohm voice coils. I have each sub wire in parallel and connected to each other in series, producing a 4 ohm load (correct ? ) Any and all help you provide is greatly appreciated, thanx in advance.

- I would like to say thank you very much. I too love the sound of a sealed box and I thought that because a dealer/install shop recommended a vented box that would definitely know more about enclosure design...Boy was I wrong!!! What I actually got was the sound that the installer liked...I guess. I called a kicker tech support after I left you this e-mail last night and he basically told me the same thing. He gave me specs on a new box design that was sealed and between the size of sealed compact and sealed SQ. He recommended I use 3/4" MDF, seal all corners with silicone and use internal bracings. This morning I did'nt have to work, so I set at it. I must tell you that the box sounds wonderful!!! I have'nt carpeted the box as of yet, but I filled the box half way with loose poly-fill and man, this thing is mean!!! The bass is tight and accurate and I'm ordering another Kicker KX-1200.1, so I can have an amp for each of my solobaric L7-15's; can't wait to hear how this sounds!!! I'd like to thank etirbynnor "the GURU" for answering my question to the "T", man you're good and I'll be back because I have a few more slight issues that I need to address. I want to be ready for this spring when all the "BASSHEADS" come out!!! My Benz looks hot after I found aftermarket euro-headlight, a new chrome grill with the MB star centered in it, along with the chrome lip across the trunk. Of course, spring time warrants me to break out the new shoes that I purchased over the winter. Now she (my Benz) will look good and sound great!!! THANX AGAIN!!!

Hello mercedesman4,

Your setup sounds great. I had to settle for Blaupunkt in my Mercedes.

It sounds like the culprit is your enclosure. It's possible that by tweaking the settings, you could improve the sound somewhat, but having been used to the sound of a sealed enclosure, maybe not. Sealed enclosures tend to produce tighter, more accurate bass and have a flatter frequency response curve. They are also generally the enclosure of choice when looking for a SQ (sound quality) oriented setup.

Ported enclosures will produce louder bass than sealed enclosures, and maybe that's why some audio guys push them. They also allow the speaker to operate more efficiently, so you need less amp power for a given volume. Higher tuning on a ported box will get louder, but at the expense of sound quality. Lower tuning will still get louder than a sealed box, and the sound quality will be better than a box tuned higher, but still not as good as sealed. That's what I meant about tweaking the settings. You may see some improvement by setting the crossover lower, decreasing bass boost, or by turning the subsonic filter on/off. I'm no audiophile, but personally I've never been able to stand the sound of a ported enclosure, however it was tuned. Sealed just sounds better.

Hope this helps.
