The smoke, is it blue or a very black smoke. Blue means oil leak past your rings, black means too much fuel, carb cleaning and or adjustment. Look at the plug, check for carbon build up there.

Black smoke carburetor has too rich of fuel mixture. Blue or white smoke is oil getting into the exhaust because of either over filling with oil, engine was tipped on its side or piston rings are bad and is getting blow by through the cylinder.

It is an unloader. You can probably go to Hotsy or Landa and find the service manual for your pump with the instructions. ( this unloader is used on several models of pumps.

The diesel fuel pump is bad, replace it.

Is this a karcher hds unit?

There is a device by the air intake that looks like a semi-circle. This adjusts the air flow to the burner chamber. You can adjust this according in order to get rid of the smoke but you have to get it right in order not to have to much air in order to blow out the flame.

If this does not work you may have to clean out the fuel injector and housing. Then if it continues you may have to clean the exterior of the coil.

If you are to clean the exterior of the coil make sure you take the cover off from the bottom three bolts (bolt on to base of machine) and not the three bolts at the top of the housing(were fuel injector is). You can use a karcher product called RM 81 which acts as a degreaser and pressure wash the coil( making sure all electrics are covered up).

I have come accross this a few times as the injector sprays diesel on the coil if the air flow is not fixed correctly and then the smoke you are seeing is the machine burning off the diesel that is on the coil.

This is a classic problem with the reddy heaters. They have a filter which over time plugs up. This causes the air/fuel mixture ratio to change because the pump pressure is determined by the air bleed. As the filter plugs the air pressure drops and the fuel also drops meaning the burner is running lean. This eventually causes the unit to shut down and as you said smoke comes out. Change oil and run until smoke is clear.

Were I to pick from one of those three, I would pick the Landa. The most reliable pumps are Hotsy and since Karcher bought Landa and Hotsy, those three brands now have Hotsy pumps, though it doesn't say it on the machines.

Check crankcase vent. Possible pressure building up in crankcase causing blow-by across piston.
