SOURCE: RE: Lawn mower blades will not engage

This sounds like a faulty ground condition, the PTO clutch requires a ground provided by the chassis wiring harness to function and a ground for the ignition switch to kill fire to the coils. The other components work as they should because the voltage regulator, fuel shutoff solenoid and starting interlock system have their own grounds. The ignition switch in these mowers is a large round plastic switch not capable of grounding itself, it should have a black wire leading from the terminal marked "G" on the backside of the switch.

to diagnose a faulty ground you'll need a basic 12V test lamp:

Unplug the switch and and install a the test light clip on the positive terminal of the battery, probe the ground wire in the unplugged harness that corresponds with the "G" terminal only. If the ground is good the lamp in the test light will illuminate brightly, if poor or faulty the lamp will not light or be noticeably dim.

Further verification of a faulty ground or failed PTO switch can be tested at the PTO Clutch harness, turn the key on, engine NOT running, and pull the PTO Switch to the engage position, with the test light clipped onto the Negative Battery terminal or chassis, back probe the connected PTO clutch terminals. If the PTO switch is good and the ground is good then Only one terminal will illuminate the lamp, if both wires illuminate the lamp then the ground is faulty, if no lamp illumination then a loss of power is suspected, check the terminals on the PTO switch and Ignition switch for power.

Typical Ground termination locations are on the frame near the rear of the tractor frame, above the transmission, in the steering column area and near the solenoid, check for a loose or corroded eyelet terminal, broken wire, or a missing fastener in these areas.

Engage the blades and then drop the deckand the engine dies

Could be in safety circuit. or could be excessive load on the motor with deck running. Check all safetys, like seat switch, clutch switch, pto switch. You didn't indicate what type of tractor you have,

DTY 4000 tractor dies when engaging pto, new

Hi,
This is just a suggestion. Try pulling the choke out about one third to one half and then engage the PTO. Sometimes the air idle adjust screw port gets a tiny speck of debris in it. If with the choke partially out and the PTO engages the just grab a screwdriver and turn the air idle mixture screw counter clockwise a hair.

My craftsman mower shuts off every time the blades are engaged. What is the problem?

you most likely have a shorted or open safety switch. you did not mention year or model # so I can only guess what configuration you have, but typically there are the following safety switches on a riding lawn mower: clutch/brake on switch (under floorboard at clutch, this allows you to get off the tractor with engine running if brake is applied), Reverse gear safety switch (will shut engine off if attempting to go in reverse with blades on...follow the gear handle rod down to transmission, may be internal or external of differential), there is also usually a disable switch to allow blade operation in Reverse and this is usually relay operated via a button or turn of the key position, Seat safety switch (under seat and usually is disabled via engaging the clutch/brake switch, this switch will kill the motor if you come off of the seat unless brake is applied), and of course a switch that is tied in to tell when blades are engaged (engage handle or PTO switch). It is actually simpler than it sounds and you dont' need to be an electrician to figure it out. start out with a visual inspection of the switches that you can see. I would suspect the transmission position (reverse) switch first, do you have an override? if so, turn it on and see if engine stays running with blades engaged. hope this helps and here is a link to a company that deals mower parts and has alot of great parts breakdown illustrations online. A craftsman is pretty much the same as a MTD or White Outdoor model, so look those up and it will show you the areas where switches are.

What would cause my craftsman zero turn to die when i engage the blades?

First, sort out between two possibilities: 1. The safety system is killing the engine -- for example, if the seat switch is faulty or misadjusted, the engine ignition is killed when you activate the blade engagement switch. 2. The blades, spindles, or belts are binding or stuck, which would "drag" the engine to a stop. I suggest you remove the belt that drives the mower from the engine. If the engine still dies when you engage the blade switch, it's problem #1. Check all connections, and check the seat switch with an ohmmeter. If the engine does not die, then you have mechanical drag. With engine off and the belts taken off, turn each spindle to find out if one is frozen or binding. Good luck!
