If the gas is more than 30 days old, and it has been sitting in hot weather (90+), then it starts to go bad, rather quickly.
(And if no fuel stabile was added to the fuel before hand)
Or, if the gas can spout was not sealed properly in storage, it could have been water contaminated, from sprinklers or rain.
It may not necessarily be the motor itself.
The cheapest fix, is to drain all of the water out of the mower's gas tank. (you will still have some bad gas in the lines)
Put some fresh gas, with fuel stabile, in the tank and see if it will start. If it does, it may take a few minutes of operation to flush the bad gas out of the line, and motor.
That was the problem with my mower. It turned out to be a gas issue, and my mower was fine. Good luck.
