You need to downgrade to 1.50 first then upgrade to 3.40oe and no you dont really need a umd inserted

Have you down graded the psp to ver 1.50? you can not upgrade to this version unless you have. Also have you got a UMD in the drive because you do need one in it.

Hello. It is very simple do to this. You should only follow my steps:

First of all, you have to download a file name called EBOOT.PBP (psp upgrade) which is located HERE
Save it on your desktop and do not rename the file.
Plug in your USB cable and go to your PSP's System Settings and on the second from the top press X on USB CONNECT. Go to "My Computer" and click on Removable disk. Here it should be a folder named PSP followed by a subfolder called GAME. Enter this folder, create a new folder and name it UPDATE (in caps without spaces). In the folder you have just created, move (copy - paste) EBOOT.PBP here from your desktop. Also, if there is no GAME folder, you have to create it in the folder "PSP". Be carefully! Remove your hardware and fully charge your PSP and plug it on the wall. Go to Games Area and choose Memory Stick by pressing X. You will see now PSP Update version
*. **. Press PSP Update version *. ** (it will only clear your screen for a couple seconds). Press Start if you want to upgrade. Go to User Agreement and start the upgrade process. While it's started, do not touch your PSP. Leave it somewhere until the upgrade is done.

I hope I helped you!

How 2 upgrade

It depends what firmware you are trying to upgrade to. If you want to install custom firmware on your PSP, check this YouTube channel:
If you want to install official firmware, you can find a list of downloads here:
When you select the firmware you want to install, download it. You will get a .zip file with a file inside called EBOOT.PBP. Follow these steps to update:
1.) Connect your PSP to your PC. 2.) Open the PSP folder and then the GAME folder. 3.) Right click INSIDE the GAME folder, and click New Folder 4.) Name the new folder UPDATE 5.) Place the EBOOT.PBP file you downloaded into the UPDATE folder. 6.) Disconnect your PSP from your computer, and select the MEMORY STICK ICON in the GAME section. 7.) Find the PSP Update Version.. and run it, complete the on screen steps to install the new firmware.

You just connect the psp to your computer using a usb cable. Then create a folder in your Memory Stick Duo named “PSP“, under this folder, create a sub-folder named “GAME“, under this sub-folder, create another sub-folder named “UPDATE” (Note: all folders name must be CAPITALIZED).Download the PSP 5.51 update file via this link: the file as “EBOOT.PBP” to your desktop then inside the UPDATE folder copy the EBOOT.PBP.Then go to games>memory stick and hit the x button there should be an game press x again to upgrade. The udpate process will take about 10 minutes.Thats all.

Can i play eboot.pbp on psp?

yes you can if you have a custom firmware. the psp will not recognize the eboot file itself unless you put the eboot file inside of a folder with the name of the game as the folder name. then you save it to psp/game. iso and cso files are placed in the iso folder of the root.

Firmware 4.01 is not installing in my psp

I think you are trying to install a CFW update on an OFW PSP. Just rename 401.PBP to EBOOT.PBP and get rid of the other EBOOT.PBP.

The problem might be that you used the file name EBOOT.PBP.PBP to save it.Delete the file name you use in saving it on your pc and re-type EBOOT.PBP.

How can I play PSX games?

You need to put the whole folder with the EBOOT.PBP and the KEYS.BIN in it, in the GAME folder. Before that I would upgrade to M-33 custom firmware.
