SOURCE: when I connect my transcend
This could be a couple things since it's an external HDD. Here's what I would try:
Keep in mind that new drives are cheap. a 2 TB hdd will run you about as much as SpinRite. But getting a new drive will NOT recover your data of course. So if that data is important to you, see if you can recover it with SpinRite, the team over at GRC is awesome when it comes to support as well.

SOURCE: My computer doesn't recognize my
1. Try a different USB port. If other ports recognize it, then the original port is fried.
2. Try a different computer. If the other computer does not recognize it, then your flash drive is damaged.

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,
if this fails to fix the problem
hope this helps you

The disk was mounting intermittently. Then I messed around with the firewire and noticed that if I pushed it a certain way, the disk would mount. So I got out the USB cable and power cable that came with the LaCie and plugged that in. Problem solved. Mounted instantly, backed up with Time Machine perfectly. So, check your connection. I am going to contact LaCie and get another Firewire cable as that is what I paid for, but in the meantime the USB will cover me.
