How to adjust tension on belt of John Deere Ride On D140

How to adjusted Cutting Deck Belt Tension

You do not say which size cutting deck you have. I will be writing about the 48", 3 blade cutting deck

The belt on this deck is self tensioned. The tension is provided by a spring attached to a moveable pulley on the deck. When the belt is in place you can manually force this pulley forward/backward and it will release the tension.

If the belt is off track, place the belt back around all the pulleys in the correct path, lastly force this spring loaded pulley forward/backward (depending on your deck, the direction is not important, the tension is) to get the belt around the pulley. If the belt is placed correctly, when you release the spring loaded pulley it will properly tension the belt.

Typically, these belts should not be jumping off. If yours is coming off frequently the belt may be worn. When they wear they get quite a bit longer, then the tension pulley cannot apply the correct tension. Rarely does the tension spring have to be replaced.

The other problem that causes belt jumping is worn spindles and stationary pulleys. The spindles are the most likely to need replacement. You can buy excellent replacements for JD spindles on Amazon for very reasonable prices. The following spindles are super replacement spindles for the 48" deck. They may very well be the same for smaller and larger decks; I have not researched that. Just search Amazon for Silver Streak # 285851.

Silver Streak # 285851 Spindle Assembly for JOHN DEERE GY21098, JOHN DEERE GY20962,

Product description:

You can also find replacements for the flat pulleys on Amazon. If you cannot find what you need there, go to http://www.greenpartstore.com//

I have a John Deere L120. How do I install the tension spring? The service manual diagrams for the belt are not very clear in regards to the spring.

I hear that on the service manual and the springs. Take a look at these decks if you talking about a deck belt and find yours. Then look for the spring routing visually.

If you need drive belt info look here:

I would like to know if this was enough info for you so that you were able to re-connect the spring.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Trying to change the blade belt on my john deere gx75 lawn tractor and can't can someone help me through this?

Get in touch with your common sense. You have the deck out from under the mower and you have cleaned it. By chance is there a belt install guide on a sticker on the deck? This is a very common sticker. If you can get on fixya you can Google "John Deere deck belt install" with your model number. Failing all that, look at all the pulleys and the belt itself. The belt is flat on one side and v shaped on the other. Now look at all the pulleys, some have a groove and some are flat. The groove tells you the v of the belt goes in there and the flat tells you it is to take up slack or absorbs shock and the flat of the belt runs touches it. There is but one way it will go. One of the pulleys moves in an arc on a spring loaded swivel, that is your tensioner and will be the last one as you will move the tensioner to get it installed.

Blade belt diagram for John Deere LX178 Riding

Remember the belt rule, V of the belt goes in V pulleys.Flat pulleys that are stationary or move get the back of the belt. You can figure it out. Its not rocket science. Remember at some point there has to be a tensioner, usually gets the back of the belt if its a flat pulley. U may have to remove the spring and then reattach the spring after the belt is routed.
