SOURCE: MTD Lawn Tractor problem

The front belt should be a 954-0280A, rear 954-0370. When you go to higher gears, the front belt should be getting tighter as the vari-speed pulley is moving further back. Remove the shift plate, put the transmission in neutral. Start the engine, put speed selector in highest gear and slowly let out on the clutch. You should be able to see what the problem is. It will do everything the same as if were in gear, except move. Make sure you have the correct belts.

You can download an owner's manual from this link. It may or may not have the belt routing schematic, but I'm betting it does. You will need to input the model number of the machine you have to enable the download.

Sears mid engine 30 inch breaks drive belts

for a belt to wear on the inside means that the pulleys are badly worn or you have the wrong section belt in use.V belts never work on the bottom of the pulleys. For a belt to operate properly the top of the belt should be just above the edge of the pulleys. For variable speed pulleys the belt should never make contact with the bottom of either pulley. Measure across the top of the flanges of the pulley and that will be the first number of the belt you require ie 14v1406 will be a 14mm wide belt and 1406 mm in circumference. or 3/8 41 will be 3/8 across the top and 41" long

I just replaced the drive belt on my Troy built auto transmission Bronco 42" riding mower, and now it goes a lot slower. The belt seems to be routed correctly

The bronco is a variable speed mower from what I remember. There is a belt that goes from the crankshaft to a variable speed pulley and another belt from the variable to the transmission. If your 1st belt is too long it will never get up to speed. Do you have to push the pedal down further now than before to get it to move. ? If so your main belt is too long.

Belt jump off the drive pulley

I don't have this kind of mower. But I was faced with the same problem recently. I got my belt back on by taking a large wrench and affixing it to the bolt head holding the pulley which you want to slip the belt on. Hold the belt firmly against the pulley and turn the wrench and the belt in the grove will walk around the pulley until it slips in place.
