When opened, my dell latitude810 just falls flat. What is the problem & how do I fix it?

It sound like the hinges are either extremely loose or broken. This requires disassembling a good portion of the laptop case. If you are comfortable with that, there are videos on YouTube that explain the process. Search using Tighten Dell Hinge or Repair Dell Hinges.

Check with Ford for recall info. There were a few years the rear window hinges were defective and recalled.

Sony VGN AR630

If the lid has a small slack and then is firmer again when the lid/screen is in another position, then the hinge mounting screws is most likely loose and the mounting screws needs to be tighten.
If the hinges are loose no matter what the position of the lid/screen is in then, they need to be replaced, there is no adjustment to tighten the hinges.

Loose screen hinges

You can't. They're worn out and the way they're manufactured doesn't allow for a easy tightening unfortunately. I would pick up a new / used pair from ebay and then just swap them out.

Screen hinge too loose

a the base of the screen you may see some scews that cover access panels, open them up and you can tighten the little nut that tensions the hinge. I had a laptop that was shaky and I tightened the hinges and it was OK after that.
