When i shift to 2nd gear and let off it shifts back on its own

Travis:
Put the rear derailleur into second gear and stop the bike before it shifts back down. Look carefully at the derailleur and you will see two small screws next to each other. These are stop screws. The stop screw for high gear may be out of adjustment, or the front derailleur is out of alignment putting sideways torsion on the chain forcing the chain to drop back into first gear.

I have a 21 speed mountain bike. it was wrecked, and now my front gear derailer is not locking into position, it always returns to the first gear unless i hold it in gear. any quick fix solutions as i...

The answer is to tighten the shift handle. The resistance to movement is inside the actual shift knob - it may be worn (tightened again and again) until there is no take up. Usually, you can turn the screw that holds the shift handle on, to tighten it. The pivot screw holds a One Way Clutch to assist in selecting gears.

I suggest that you uncrew the shift screw and add a small peice of paper to the "stack" to increase total width. Then you can turn the screw (at the pivot point) to increase friction of the handle.

There are gear shifts on both handle bars (diamondback cobra 24). How do I instruct my 10 year old how to shift the gears? which is easiest setting and hardest setting?

I strongly suggest taking the bike and your son into a bike shop. They will be happy to show him not only how to shift the gears, but why and when. Also they may even throw in some maintenance tips.

The easiest settings will be labeled 1 and the hardest the larger number. if you were too look at the bike where the chain is, the gears that are closest to the frame are the easiest and the ones far away are the hardest. In the back this means the largest gears are the easiest in the front they are opposite, smallest gears are the easiest.

There are a number of good books and many free instructional videos on youtube that show shifting principles. The biggest issue for 10 year olds is whether they can reach the levers comfortably.

Here is link that might help:http://www.parktool.com/repair/byregion.asp?catid=53. Also sight from back to front along the chain. The cage of the front derailleur should be parallel to the chain along its length in all three positions. Hope this helps.

Difficult shifting through gears

I do a lot of mountain bike riding and there have been a few times where the gear changing hardware has definitely become bent rendering it nearly useless when it comes to changing gears.  Inspect the hardware very closely for any signs of damage.  Also be sure to look at where the gear shift cables meet the gear shifters on the bars.  Where it connects in you will typically find an adjustment knob (note that you may have the same type of adjustment knob where the cable meets the gear shift mechanism also) which the cable rides in.  You will make much larger jumps in adjustment when using this method as the screws on the gear changing mechanism, which you mention in your original post, are more for fine tuning.  Best of luck to you on te repair and I hope you don't need any new hardware!
