Ripstik torsion bar problem solutions

It's sort of difficult to do turns on my ripstik I'm thinking that the tortion bar is too tight?

Hello, the torsion bars on toyotas especially the 4 wheel drives can sag over time and I have seen them break also. Matter of fact I had a 4runner break one three times. They were all new. Just the type of roads we have in the good ole USA. Thank you

The torsion keys are supposed to give 2-3" additional drop vs.the "free" method. I know adjusting the torsion bars kills the ride but how bad is it and how far can you go???

Believe, 15/16 socket would be the correct size. Also, be aware that they are probably pretty rusted and VERY hard to turn at first. Air tools do no good, so you'll need a 1/2" drive breaker bar and a long pole to put on the end. This is the fastest way to get the torque you need to break those suckers loose. 

I suggest measure and writing down the height about 3-5 spots on each side, whether it be the frame, body, or whatever. Crank each side a few FULL thread turns, then measure again. Once you get about the height you want, measure both side to make sure they're equal. After that, it's best to get a full alignment as some of the suspension will now be at different angles (of course).

Step 1 Jack up the vehicle on the wheel to be adjusted, and set the frame rail onto a jack stand. This is to release the stress on the torsion bar so it can be adjusted easily.

  • Step 2 Crawl underneath the vehicle and locate the torsion bar mount on the frame. There will be a bolt in the center of the mount, pointing upward. This is the adjusting bolt, and it will accommodate a large-sized socket driver.
  • Step 3 Adjust the torsion bar. Turning the adjustment bolt clockwise will tighten it, raising the amount of load that can be placed on the bar. This will raise the vehicle when it is taken off the jack stand. Turning it counterclockwise will lower the available spring rate and cause the car to sit lower. Turning it too far in either direction can cause problems, so follow the specific vehicle's manufacturer guidelines when making wide adjustments. Normally, only one full turn will be enough to give the desired result.
  • Step 4 Lower the vehicle, and check the clearances of the frame to the ground. They should be the same for both sides. If they are not, then more adjustment will be necessary to the torsion bar adjustment bolts.

    How can I adjust the front torsion bars?

    loosen of the lock nut on the adjuster bolt and then turn it in to increase the tension in the torsion bars
    if turning that bolt is difficult then a jack under the front of the vehicle will lighten the load on the thread and make turning easier
    remember that adjusting the height if the vehicle by adding extra tension to the torsion bars will alter the wheel alignment

    How do i ajust the tortion bar on the back of my berlingo to lift it up about 2in

    torsion bars are bars made from spring steel and are subjected to twisting action or the suspension. To raise a vehicle increase the twist applied to the spring bar anchor point at the body mount. Normally there is a lever with a bolt adjustment in the end section that presses against a body part. Screwing this bolt in increases the twist applied and so raises the body. It may be easier to turn if you jack the body up of the suspension to start with. If the bolts are just about all the way in it indicates that the torsion bar is weak and you may have to back the bolt right off, lift the body and select a new spline setting for the arm and start the process again. This may require using a stilson wrench on the spline to get some twist started so that the new spline can be selected.

    How do we adjust a torsion bar to the a-arms

    This not that simple Your tortion bars are must have some distortion at this point being a 2000 you will need to estamate some what but it can be done To tighen the tention you adjust the anchor arm bolts at the rear of the bar one on each side you also need a mesurment in the front take some string and strech it tight across the front end wheel to wheel at the bottom of the ball joints for your referance point the lower joint The vehicle should be on flat level ground Tighten the anchor arm bolts one at a time measure the distance from the top of the thearded end of the adjuster bolt to thepoint where it rides on the adjusted bracket then measure the distanct from the center of the bar front to the string when this distance is vary close the suspension should work fine Rember you may have to tighten one bar more then the other to get this but have to take into account bar distorition from years of use good luck

    Not the ones from the factory. There are aftermarket adjustable torsion bars sold.

    Torsion Bar Adjustment

    Remember if you do five turns on the right side do five turns on the left side.
    First, get both front wheels off the ground (jack the truck up from the frame). Look underneath, at the tortion bar and follow it back to the cross member. Recessed inside that cross member is the adjuster. Turn the bolt clockwise to raise truck. After five turns on both bolts let the truck down and see how much space is between the lower control arm and the rubber stopper. You should see about an inch. The upper control arm should not touch the frame and as well, there should be about an inch of space there too.

    How do you adjust tortion bars on a alfetta sud


    An 'Afetta sud' doesn't exists... In teh old range you'll have the 'North' series ( with the 4-inline and V-6 engines ) guilietta, giulia, Junior, Alfetta, Alfa 75, Alfa 90, Alfa 6, ...
    And the 'south' series with the boxer engine ( Alfa 33, Sprint, 145, 146, Arna, Alfasud, etc...

    On an Alfetta, you have 2 screws at the rear-end of the torsion bars, very easy to adjust! Don't forget to drive a bit before measuring the height ( Or let wobble the car up and down by hand... )

    at the end of the torsion bar back by the transfer case should be a metal piece with a bolt going stright up through it when you tighten this bolt inwards the tension is increased, let me know how you make out.
