The longest distance possible will help with the lint build up don't kink your hose to a 90 degree angle as it will block air flow. Curves are fine and you sould allow for a little leway as you may need to move the dryer at some point .

Maytag model #: med5770tq0 won't dry. Please help

Dear Emily.
Several problems.
First, did this dryer ever work properly hooked up as it is?
I mean hooked to the roof event?
If it used to work just fine, then I suspect the vent to the roof is clogged with lint and is not allowing the heat to escape.
If it never did work right,(for example: it is new to us) then I'd venture dryers are not supposed to vent their hot air that far away, they do not have a strong enough blower to push that air that distance.
Then, you might try to find another place to vent the hot air, with a total distance of only 10 feet from the dryer, even if you only vented it while you were actually drying clothers.
I doubt if the last item is for you, but I have sometimes seen where the washing machine did not spin all the water out of the clothes, and then the dryer needed all day to get the clothes dry.
Be blessed.

Can you vent downward before exhausting out the wall with over the range microwave

No! I do not recommend this, it needs to be vented out the shortest possible distance in order to insure maxium effect on removal.

Dryer cuts off after 10 minutes

Agree with you. Make sure the lint collector is clean and ditto for the vent. If it goes up to roof have to check it there also to make sure there are no obstructions whatsoever in vent line. Unit is turning off because it is overheating. If lint collector and vent is squeaky clean and unit blows out like crazy then the temp switch is opening up prematurely and might need replacement or jumping - your call. Would like to vent directly through the exterior wall without any vent tubing. I've been told that the dryer need some pipe distance to dry properly. Is this true?

No you can hook that up as short as you want... if fact in my mind the shorter the better... the more air you can move the better it will dry...
