SOURCE: Odor

First, clean or replace the filter. Next, mix a very weak solution (40:1 ratio) of bleach and water to fill the unit. the bleach will kill any bacteria that could be causing the odor, but NOT harm anyone, The filter will take care of any hard water issues. Just don't make the mistake of thinking "If a weak solution is good, a strong one is better". NOT TRUE. Stay with the 40:1 mix unless you like breathing bleach. (Yuk) Note: It may take a couple of days for the odor to go away.

SOURCE: tanks not draining

You may be over-tightening the caps. It's tempting to over-tighten because it's a big tank of water that you're about to turn upside down! I had the same problem and the fix turned out to be just that - take the tank(s) back out, loosen the caps (hear the Ssszzzzz as the vacuum breaks), now tighten the caps again, but just enough that the water doesn't leak, and no tighter. Get the cap snug, but not so tight that you couldn't turn it some more. Do it over a sink the first couple of times until you get the feel of it.

Why does my humidifier holmes 1700 blows air but no water or mist?

If the water has been sitting in the reservoir for days without use, it may develop a film on the ultrasonic element which inhibits the creation of the mist to come out the top of your humidifier. I would lift off the tank and empty the reservoir. Then VERY GENTLY with a piece of paper towel, wipe the ultrasonic element (looks like a disk the size of a quarter at the bottom of the reservoir) to clean off any film. Then replace the tank and let the reservoir fill up the tank and try it again.

Good luck

Elektra humidifier has a flashing water warning sign

Is this a mist generator with an ultrasonic element, popular for "health?"
These have a wick and water is not going trough the dry wick by itself. One should make all of the wick wet, from bottom to top. After that the water keeps being taken up to the element until the device is stored and the wick dries out again. Another thought is that these ultrasonic elements are very similar to a buzzer, like in toys. Two round sheets of metal with plastic in between. This is not like having long lifetime. For expensive mist makers you could perhaps order a new element but I do not have high hopes. Being so vulnerable the humidifiers are shipped containing no water. It is important to rest the top of the wick in water also. Just making the wick wet close to the element does not help or gives bad results.

Mist coning out leavs white dust all over wood work, why?

More than likely the problem is minerals in the water. Impeller and ultrasonic designs send these minerals into the air. If the water in your area contains a lot of minerals, you will notice them as dust.

I would suggest that if you're using well water, switch to using bottled spring water or bottled distilled water. But you'll need to flush out your humidifier first. Use a 50/50 solution of White Vinegar and water. Fill the tank about half way and run the humidifier until the tank is almost empty. You may want to do this in a garage, if you have access to one, so that the vinegar odor won't remain in the house. Once this has been accomplished, dump out any of the remaining solution and flush the unit again with bottle spring water or distilled water. That should do the trick

Even if you aren't using well water, since your water supply has a high mineral content. I would strongly encourage you to use bottled spring water or distilled water in the future. By the way, a gallon of Distilled Water cost a lot less than bottled spring water. In my area I can get a gallon of distilled water from CVS Pharmacy or Food Lion for about $1.00.

Good luck. Please let me know if this solved your problem.

There is not mist coming out. What should I do??

The moisture released by this (or any ultrasonic) humidifier should not be visible, so it is very possible that it is working correctly. Try filling the reservoir and marking the water level with a small piece of tape. Then run the humidifier for a few hours, and check the water level again. If the water level is below the edge of the tape, then you know it is releasing moisture into the air, and everything is working fine.

The older style of humidifiers created a mist by spinning a disk that was partly dipped into the water reservoir. They had to be refilled often, and the mist could leave water spots or dust on nearby furniture. The water level should change very slowly in your ultrasonic humidIfier compared to a misting humidifier.

The humidifier appears to be working (with sound ) but is not collecting any water-cleaned the filter and still the same -the lit up area where it usually has the numbers is sitting at P2- I have lost the...

Alison -

A humidifier will not collect any water. A humidifier has a tank that you fill with water. The water is released / forced into dry air to make it moist, usually by a fan or ultrasonic method.

A dehumidifier has an empty tank that gets filled by the appliance extracting moisture from the air. The tank will have to be manually emptied periodically, otherwise the safety / water level switch will shut the unit off so that the tank doesn't over flow.

I suspect that you meant to say dehumidifier.. and if so, please provide the manufacturer's name and model. The "P2" indication will be difficult to interpret without knowing the manufacturer's info.

White dust coming out of humidifier

A concern is minerals in the water. Impeller and ultrasonic designs send these minerals into the air. If the water in your area contains a lot of minerals, you will notice them as dust. The EPA does not issue health warnings about minerals in the air, but does recommend using low-mineral water (such as distilled water) in your humidifier. Many ultrasonic models feature a demineralization cartridge that filters minerals out of the water to prevent the dust.
