Here is a website link that has picture illustrations of how to sew in a standard zipper, using both the centered and lapped methods, as well as how to insert the popular invisible zipper.

Clean your machine and oil it. It might just be dirty. I have teh same machine. Also, after that, if teh needle is old it may be dull. This machien can get finicky if the needles are not sharp.
Make sure teh pressure knob at teh top was not released.

From what I can tell looking at your manual, you have a snap on zipper foot that came with your machine. If, you do not have your manual and workbook, go to www.singerco.com and you can download them for free, if you click on support. All you have to enter is 590 and voila. It is nice to do it anyway because you can print it out and save a copy on your computer plus make the diagrams larger. Good luck and happy sewing
