SOURCE: WILL NOT BUILD PRESSURE

Many craftsman compressor are built by champbell hausfeld using a dry type of cylinder and piston (no oil, no crankcase). If dry type, check for worn cylinder and piston ring. Pieces of the vinyl ring can jamb between the reed valves in the head causing air to escape from the intake. If your compressor has a crankcase and oil, check for broken reed valves in head. Spray soap solution on hoses, checkvalve, drainvalve, and fittings to check for leaks. Most likely problem is reed valves broken or open. Parts are available from sears or match parts to chpower.com. enjoy

SOURCE: Air leakage through pressure switch needle

1)Let your unit pump up.
2)Turn it off.
3)Find the supply line from the pump to the tank.
4)Remove the supply line from the pump head.
5a)If you hear air coming from the tank you have a bad check valve.
5b)If you do not hear air coming from the tank, you have a leaky
pressure switch.

SOURCE: I have a Porter Cable

I believe you have a head valve or piston ring problem. The parts you replace are suppose to leak. It is a safety feature that doesn't allow the motor to burn up before the pump warms up. Kind of like a soft start feature. If you look on the breakdown part number 107 Kit Valve Plate is what you need to inspect. Sounds like your valve plate is either worn or damaged. If you go into the pump you will have to get part 103 also which is a gasket kit. Or you can try to salvage the old gaskets.
If the valve plate is ok you will need to inspect the rings that go around the pistons. Some times you will get one that gets brittle and breaks off scarring the cylinder. Look for these two things, I am pretty sure one of them is the problem with your compressor.

  1. Pressure switch: The pressure switch may not be shutting off the compressor when it reaches the set pressure level. If this is the case, the switch will need to be replaced.
  2. Check valve: The check valve prevents the compressed air from flowing back into the compressor pump when it is not running. A malfunctioning check valve can cause pressure to continue to build up, even when the compressor is idle. A damaged or worn-out check valve may need to be replaced.
  3. Piston rings: If the compressor's piston rings are worn or damaged, air can leak past the piston and cause pressure to continue to build even when the compressor is idle. In this case, the piston rings will need to be replaced.

How do you change the oil on a lindsay model 80 air compressor

there should be a drain plug at the bottom of the compressor on the opposite side to the pulley or of direct mounted opposite to the motor
remove it and drain out the oil
replace it and about 1/2 way up on the crankcase you will see a glass window with either a dot or a line across the center
refill up to that line . it can be a bit above the dot or line but it should not be below that mark

100 psi is around the pressure that the engine goes back to idle

The Cool mode wont cool. It's just like fan mode. I cleaned all the dust off the panels and still wont blow cool air.

First the weather is extremely hot mid 90's and humid.I have a Trane combination a/c heat pump system. The A/C was pumping out warm air.I called for a technician and the problem was the compressor was not working. The solution/fix was to replace compressor start capacitor. The technician was here for about an hour. The compressor was running before he left however I informed him the air coming out of the a/c ducts after one hour of run time did not feel as cool as usual. It took from 1pm until 10 pm at night to cool the house air down to 80 degrees and the system ran constantly.I left it on 80 as that is where I usually leave it. Today again it is running all day barely able to keep the house at 80.My home was built in 07 block house, well insulated with thermal double pane insulated windows.I suggested to the tech to check the refrigerant level but he did not think it necessary and did not perform the check while here. The unit will cool the house down to 80 degrees but runs constantly. My question is: Should I have a technician come check out the system to insure proper refrigerant levels and pressure????????

My air compressor can pump air in but when it get

when it reaches 120 psi it will cut out usually will cut back in at around 70- 80 psi if it struggles to restart at cut in pressure it may not be bleeding the head pressure om your compressor . this is done by the pressure switch which when shuts off releases a small squirt of air under it . to solve this problem you may need new switch . there is also the non return valve to check

I have worked on many makita compressors and have run-across this problem on a few of them. Your compressor has a check valve that is supposed to hold tank pressure after the switch reaches set pressure. There is an unloader valve built into the pressure switch that releases the pressure in the discharge hose after the unit shuts off. The unloader allows the compressor to restart with-out any pressure in the discharge line. If the brass check valve is leaking pressure back into the system, air will leak out of the unloader valve. Follow the discharge line to the tank and you will see the brass check valve. To test valve for fault, run the compressor till it builds around 80 psi and unplug the unit from the wall outlet. Remove the 1/4" hose connector from the check valve and check for air leaking out of the valve. If it is leaking you can order form www.toolpartsdirect.com. or call the makita 1-800 number. The price is about the same. Good Luck on your repair.
