GE bottom freezer stopped cooling

The unit needs two fans running and good airflow, one fan outside cools the condensor coil and the other inside the unit blowing across the evaporator. The compressor must start up. The defrost timer stops everything and switches on a heating element to defrost the evaporator for several minutes. Please verify these conditions.

What are twinned units?

Twin units can be two airconditioner condensers and/or two furnaces. Most manufacturers make a twinning kit that will wire two units together to operate simultaneously by one thermostat. At times, one may operate as a first stage of heating (cooling) and then the other unit can operate as second stage. Twinning unit are beneficial in commercial buildings where the load conditions vary constantly. For instance, if you twin two 4 ton units together. On a nice cool day, you may only need 4 tons of air conditioning. So, the thermostat will only turn on one unit. On a hotter day, you may need 8 tons of air, so the thermostat will turn on both units. In case you are thinking about doing this, the biggest mistake in twinning units together is using a common return air for the furnaces. Make sure you separate the return air cavities and ductwork for both of your furnaces If you don't have separate returns, you have the possibility of one of the blowers starting backwards. MY AC WORKS FOR FOUR HOURS PER DAY AND BARELY COOLS DOWN THE HOUSE, NOT MUCH AIR COMING UP TO THE UPSTAIRS OF THE HOUSE. AFTER 4 HOURS, THE OUTSIDE UNIT SHUTS UP AND NOT MORE COOL AIR COMES IN. BEFORE THIS...

I am not understanding exactly what is happening with your unit. You say it only runs for 4 hours a day and then say that after 4 hours the outside unit shut off. But you don't describe the condition of the outside unit! Is there ice on your outside unit after it runs for four hours or is it so hot that the housing would fry an egg? Since it works for four hours and then stops working, I would guess that ice forms on the condenser grill which tells the thermostat that your air is much colder than it actually is. Then it takes time for the ice to melt off again. Am I close? If so this condition is usually caused by your unit being low on freon making everything work harder. But it could also mean that you have a leak in the system somewhere. But it shouldn't be much of a leak or it wouldn't run for the 4 hours.
I would recommend you charge it to the correct level and then check for leaks.

Cooling fan won't shut off

Hi!
Check the cooling fan Relay located on the engine compartment Fuse n Relay Box, it is probably stuck ON. If fan stops when relay is removed, replace relay.
Note: Some vehicles are equipped with automatic cooling fans where the cooling fan can come on when engine is hot, even if the key is OFF or not in the Ignition, check your owners manual.
Good Luck! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

We have bought a home with the wite rodgers thermostat 1f85-275 it doesn't seem to be working. on the top right of the screen it states 1&2 stages? anyway, help would be appriciated

Hi, this thermostat is for central heat and air systems that have more then 1 stage of heating or cooling. For example, your unit may have 2 stages of cooling, as in 2 compressors, or 1 stage of cooling and 2 stages of heating as used in commercial heat pumps. This is a multi-stage heat pump thermostat. It may be just a matter of programming the stat. If you can find a manual on it, this would help. If you open the cover, it should have directions on how to program it.Make sure you have power to everything, check all breakers to see if they may be shut of, even if you have a display, doesn't mean you have high voltage to run the unit. Make sure fan is in auto, and on heat or cool, and temperature set for it to come on. Please keep me posted.
Sincerely,

PS Your unit has 1 stage of cooling, and 2 stages of heating.

What do two snow flakes on the left side of the control display mean on a Robert Shaw 9420 thermostat?

The double snowflake means that the second stage cooling is on. (One snowflake indicates first stage cooling.) This gives a greater temperature change in extremely hot conditions with than you could get with a single cooling medium and drier air in your home.
From the patent: A two stage cooling system in which the first stage's cooling affect is transferred to the second stage through direct contact with an oil-like material. The oil-like material is cooled by direct contact with water which has been evaporatively cooled. The oil-like material is then utilized to cool the air stream prior to the second stage evaporative cooling. The use of an oil-like material in the first cooling stage of evaporative cooling allows a relatively dry air stream to be produced so as to fully capitalize upon the evaporative cooling affect of the second stage cooler.

The second stage comes on if your system hasn't reached the desired temperature at the thermostat within a programmed length of time (5 minutes is a usual setting). BTW: Your system also has two stage heating.

I hope this helps.

LG PTAC acting strange in heat mode

I believe the problem in lies in the dual stage heat mode setup on the thermostat, but the unit going into defrost does make the unit act kinda strange. Even more so than other types of equipment. I would suggest hiring a licensed HVAC service technician if the problem cannot be resolved by yourself.
