F8 doesn't work with all motherboards. It will depend on the motherboard manufacturer and the BIOS chip that is fitted. Sometimes it is F11 or F2 or even sometimes the Del key.

If you don't have a floppy then you can use
http://partitionlogic.org.uk/ to try to fix the partition.
If you want to recover your files before messing with the failed partition then just boot from a Linux Live-CD and move your files on a USB stick.
