First. Is the motherboard posting? If no, the board is dead. If it is posting, is the video card working with other monitors? If yes, that LCD is broken, If it is not working with other monitors, it is defective. Also check the other I/O off the video card (VGA, HDMI, DVI).

The graphics card in my HP Pavilion Slimline s3600t computer went out. The invoice states "512 MB NVIDIA GeForce 9500GS DVI-1, HDMI, VGA Adapter". On the card it says Model P729. How can I find a

How can you find what???
If you mean find the same identical card, there are lots of the on eBay, but I'm not sure that can find a "New" one, unless you get lucky.
You can also type "shop for nvidia geforce 9500gs" on Google, and see what it brings up. You will see plenty of links that you may use as resources, or to buy from.
Here is an example on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NVIDIA-GeForce-9500GS-9500-GS-256M-DDR3-PCIE-DVI-VGA-S-Video-Graphics-Card-/201168060430?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item2ed68d000e

Otherwise, an equivalent card should work just fine

Are you using a Nvidia gfx card? If so, then go into the setup menu (comes with all Nvidia drivers). in the "screen size" menu, there should be a list of the supported screen resolutions. Do remember that the cable you use (HDMI, Display Port, VGA, DVI etc. ), also has an effect on the screen resolution.

If you don't get a display on the external monitor, then most likely your video circuit is the problem. If your laptop has a plug-in video card it can be replaced. However if it's integrated into the motherboard then you'll have to have that replaced.

you have an nvidia based card. there should be nvidia control panel with those drivers, if not download it. to find out just right click an empty portion of your desktop. then look for nvidia control panel. if it is there just start it. then on the left side of the control panel look for display and click the subcategory set up multiple displays. this will give you a window that shows both of your displays. just uncheck the clone displays. this will allow you to configure them independently.

I want to share my experienced with 2 units HP notebook; Presario V3000 (V3737tu) and Pavillion dv2000 (dv2505tx).
The notebooks have problem with Intel & NVidia VGA driver , but all the problem now solved by using microsoft display driver (Standard VGA), this way can solving the problem of lowest 4-bit (600x480) and spliting into 8 screen that makes me upset.
This like a virus/worm/malware/trojan or whatever that can makes us very upset ... please also do scan & clean virus/worm/malware/trojan with all free that can be download ... (I am using AVG, Norman Malware cleaner, Virus effect remover, PCMAV) ... Now, 1 of my notebook now can use back NVidia driver again .... the other is still scanning/cleanning, still using Microsoft VGA Standard driver and still working well ...

you need to set the resolution to 1400x900, if this is not an option in the Display settings you should download the apropriate driver for you graphics card.  once you have ascertained  what make (nvidia or ATi), and model, go to one of the following for the latest drivers.
  • nvidia; http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
  • ATi; http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
After installation and reboot, you can then select 1400x900 screen size i the display settings.

You are not alone with this problem. Some lines (like mine) run vertically rather than horizontally. The solution - sue HP. These screens have a known fault ie the Nvidia graphics chip is known to be the culprit. The company knows all about this issue but expect us to pay to put it right - sue them, you can do it online for around £35 (UK).

"No signal detected" when LCD connected with DVI-D Cable

Thank you for providing your configuration details.
You have failed to specify wheather or not your LCD Display is under Warrenty.

Perhaps these simple trouble shooting procedures will get the job done.

1. use the DVI to VGA adaptor that came with your card

Plug in a regular CRT monitor to the Primary Display Output Port using the DVI to VGA adaptor
( either port can be designated as the primary by you )
I like to use the Port nearest to the motherboard as the Primary

2. plug in the your LCD monitor on Secondary Display port using your DVI cable

At this point you should be able to see your desktop on the Primary CRT Display

3. Go to the display properties and use the Nvidia Dual Display Setup Wizard

set both desktops to CLONED at a resolution of 1024x768 and set the refresh to 60Hz
which is default for most LCD displays , some have higher refresh rates , consult your user manuel

If the display resolution and refresh are set incorrectly for your CRT or LCD you will see
Signal Out of Range ( if the display has the ability to display that error message )

At this stage both displays should be showing a Windows Desktop

If you now see your desktop on both displays , you can now put the LCD on the Primary Port

No Signal Detected ( this means the display device is not receiving a signal )

If your LCD display is still displaying the error message
"No Signal Detected" after performing the trouble shooting proceedures
You may need to read the user manuel about how to enable DVI signal input.

If you are certan you have done everything correctly but still see only "No Signal Detected"

Your LCD Display may need replacement
