One of the main, classic problems with HP is heat. What probably happened is the GPU (Graphics card, it handles the picture basically)solder cracked, meaning the onbard card and the board it goes on have come apart slightly and as **** you would need a new motherboard to remedy the problem.

If the inverter board or the back light behind the screen were bad your display would be blank, "but windows would be visible barely" the white screen indicates a bad LCD and must be changed. It is also possible the video cable from the motherboard to the screen has come loose and will need to be reseated back into place to fix it.

When I turn on the computer, the screen does not light up. I can sometimes just barely see some writing or a box, but nothing I can use.

I would assume you have used the FN and brigtness up button,
If this has not solved your problem it would more than likely be the inverter on its way out,, the inveter is located at the bottom middle of your screen bezel and would be best repaired by a professional as high voltage can be exposed

sounds like a short in the lcd inverter they cost about 40 $ us but to install it will cost about 1 hr labor (60-80 $ at most shops) it might not have to be replaced if it only does it when bumped it just might be a loose connection

Screen stays blank when turned on

take your computer to your dealer and send it for repair.

The problem is most likely the inverter for the screen.
actually to see if that is the problem you can try to put bright light to the screen and see if you barely see the picture.

Screen went almost completely dark, can barely see at all.

I had a similar problem with an HP DV2000 notebook computer. Here's the solution for the HP model DV2040TX: Problem identified and FIXED. Not the screen, not the screen power supply. The problem was the micro-switch within the right-hand-side screen hinge. This switch turns off the screen when you close the lid of the notebook - probably to prevent overheating. The switch had failed mechanically (technical term: "fallen to bits"). As a low-cost fix, I have unscrewed the main casing including the screws inside the battery compartment, removed the silver panel covering the speakers, flicked the switch "ON" using a jewellers' screwdriver, and removed the small metal tongue that is operated by a cam on the hinge. Thus, the switch is PERMANENTLY ON. Computer operates normally, shuts down normally using Windows. Just need to be aware not to close the lid without shutting down the computer beforehand. Hope this helps you. All the best, OzKluger

This is a hardware failure of the LCD back-light or a loose connection which requires partial disassembly to verify. Most likely it will require an LCD replacement. If you have an external monitor you can connect it to the video output so that you can see.
