WD MyPassPort 320 GB partially dead after an attempt to make it Win8 recovery drive.

A few days ago I purchased Lenovo Z500 and my dealer adviced my to make a recovery drive of my laptop. I had a spare WD PASSPORT 320GB external HDD so I attempted to make it recovery drive. Win 8 formatted it to 32GB and making of recovery drive was unsuccessful. Now i can use only 32 GB space of my HDD. Properties shows that HDD's capacity is only 32GB. HELP NEEDED ASAP.

Maybe you can try to format it to see if you can get the space back. But one thing important is that you may need to backup your files first. If not, you may lose them. Or you may try some file recovery tool after you format your drive. This may be help, I've try it, workable. http://www.uflysoft.com/data-recovery-mac/ Hope it can help and hope you can get back your 320G back.

You can use partition softwares to partition the drive.
eg: Minitool Partition Wizard Home Edition(its free)

Partition WizardWindows PC and Server Disk Partition Management Software

Or,if you have the original Win 8 cd and product key,you can re-install Win 8 and during the process partition the hard disk. But doing this may result in losing all your data.

I had that prob ages ago. I fixed by doing a quick format. By quick formatting your drive is not wiped.
Once quick formatted do not put anything on the drive and run software recovery software of some sort.

It is very likely you will have to purchase that software unfortunately.

There may be other courses of action, this one did work for me though. Do remember if you do this that if your drive contained 320g of data you will need 320g of space free elsewhere to recover to.

Hello,

at this point performing recovery yourself may be risky, you may end up losing alot of data. A great software that I've used for few years now myself is FileScavenger.

You should try its demo version and see if its able to scan your drive and find your files, if it is, consider purchasing the software and recover your files, it will be much cheaper compared to the 300$ but the results can't be guaranteed at this point.

whatever you do, don't write anything to the drive, only read from it. (you must recover to another hard drive and have enought space available)

If that is not your problem and you password is totally lost and you just want to use the drive for storage and not recover the files then you can simply format the drive. and use it for new data storage by copy and paste via windows explorer.

My WD250 MyPassport external HDD powers on and makes the booting sound all right. It lights up but windows XP never detects it. It used to work prefectly okay before. Any advice.

As you did not specify 2.5" or 3.5" I will give you both sets of steps:

If it is a full sized hard drive and requires power, it may not be getting enough power, have the AC adapter tested at a computer shop. If it is dead/dying replace it, if not move onto the next step.

Try a new usb cable, also available at most computer shops. If the new cable works at the shop try your old cable as well. If the old one doesn't work, buy the new cable, problem solved if it does work the problem is either in the caddy or your computer.

Assuming it's in the caddy, now have the people at the shop swap the HDD from your shell into a new one and test the drive again, as with the above if it works you're done. If it doesn't the problem is internal to the actual HDD. Time to buy a new external drive and send the old one for recovery if it has any crucial data on it.

Let me know how you make out and if needed I will provide additional steps. Also if you need data recovery help let me know your region and city and I will recommend an appropriate facility.
