If its spots this could have been from the cartridge or the fusser unit...
Do a half print test...send a print page to your printer listen to the printer print as soon as you think the printer has printed some little bit switch off the printer...take the cartridge and view the printed portion can you see the spots..if not.....than its your fusser unit thats marking the paper....remove the half printed paper slowly.....not to tear it......remover the fusser unit(hot unit)........at the back of the printer....towards the top....on the unit it self you will see a Teflon paper ....move the gear on the far end of the fusser unit itself and view if there is any spots....try cleaning this spots slowly as not to damage the Teflon or mark the Teflon.....

SOURCE: Unable to print BLACK
machine should begin cleaning automatically, and the LCD will
alternately show "CLEANING" and "PLEASE WAIT". When the machine
completes its cleaning cycle, the LCD will display the date and time.
Print the Print Quality Check Sheet and see if all colors are present:
Cleaning the Print Head
Select ALL if more than one color is not printing.
I hope it helps!!!

I had a similar problem and found out that you have to specify printing on plain paper. If you choose paper other than plain paper, it will make the black from other colors. Check also that all of your cartridges are seated properly. My magenta was not pushed all the way down so I got green instead of black ink when it mixed the colors to make black.

SOURCE: Trouble Printing
You go into your control panel and select properties, select reset ink counter and tell it you have a new color cartridge. It won't know you lied. When you choose gray scale printing it uses the colors to create black just to extend the life of your black cartridge.
