Rankine, sounds more like a worn drive block that sits under the basket. Usually the brake will not make a thumping sound. Attached is a couple of pictures. Check this out first...Catriver..post back.

It sounds like a spn down noise. I would check to see if the brake spring was changed when the brake and stator was. They had some problems with weak springs.

Maytag Centennial washer makes loud bang and the end of cycle.

I don't think it would be the bearing, as no sounds abnormal occur during it's wash cycle. I think it's at the end of the spin dry cycle, that a "brake" is applied which stops the drum from spin drying, but is being applied overly hard, which causes the drum to "BANG", stop abruptly by the brake. Only a washer repairman could deal with that problem, but, it's NOT dangerous to the washer, IF that's what the problem is. Contact a washer repairman in your area, and they'll probably be able to tell you if it's THAT or something more serious, which I doubt. The reason why the washer moves a bit when at the end of the cycle is probably because the brake which causes the spin dry cycle to come to it's end, does so very fast, which displaces the centrifugal energy abruptly towards lateral motion. Not really dangerous either.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. It sounds like it is your spin bearings. It would explain the grease and the noise also. The spin bearings have to do with the spinning of the washer. Usually, if there are loud noises associated with the washer, it is either the motor drive or the spin bearing.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

KENMORE top load, direct drive, neutral drain washers are made by Whirlpool.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Assuming that the springs are OK and that the vibration pads are in place and not worn, (See the Sears diagram or the following Whirlpool Service manual)

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

the problem points to the brake.

The washer uses a brake system to stop the basket at the end of the spin cycle.

Just like a brake on a car, it's designed to slip a bit so that the basket / car doesn't come to an abrupt halt.

Over time, the brake shoes can jam against the brake drum and bring the basket to a halt too quickly with a lot of noise.

A way to solve this (that I tried and it works) is to pull the basket tube / brake assembly and if the brake shoes look OK, spray a small amount of silicone spray on the inside of the brake drum.

Following is a description of how to remove the cabinet, pump, motor, transmission and basket drive tube on Whirlpool / Kenmore / Roper direct drive washers.

As an aside, you don't need a special spanner wrench to remove the spanner nut. I've found that a short (10") pipe wrench hooked over one of the spanner nut tabs and tapped with a hammer will usually loosen the nut. Also, rather than hitting the Drive block directly with a hammer, put a short piece of wood under it first to protect it.

Following are the Whirlpool Service manual for this type of washer and the Whirlpool parts list for their commercial washers although the consumer models are basically the same. Whirlpool (and Sears) have replacement brake pad / spring sets.

Loud clunking sound during the spin cycle, washer is balanced and on 2nd floor

If you get a very loud noise coming from the machine, and this noise islouder when it spins faster, then it is often because of a problem with the drum bearing.

The drum bearing is bad, probably drum bearing spider had broken.

On a front load the drum bearing is located at the back of the drum.

To replace the part you take apart machine, undo the belt and depending on the model you may need to remove more parts.

You can find parts and diagrams for most models here.

My washing machine makes a cluck sound at the end

Hi,

Not knowing what model machine you have, I would hazard a guess and say it is your break solenoid or break arm or a variation on a break system.

After the spin cycle, the break solenoid or motor engages a break arm to stop and lock your spinning drum. The loud clunk is normal especially in Simpson and Hoover top load machines.

You can check this by putting the machine on a spin cycle. Once the machine gets up to speed, open the door. You will hear the clunck and then the drum stops abrublty.

If that is the case, it is normal and no need to worry about it. However, it you did not have the noise before, then best to get it checked out by a repairer.

Ash

Extremely loud rumbling thunderous sound emits at the end of the spin cycle. And the washer itself makes a rather unusual shaking or vibration at the very few seconds of the end of the spin.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

It sounds as if the tub brake is grabbing.

Just as on a car, if the brakes grab the rotors or in particular the brake drums too hard, the car will shake.

If the brake shoes on the washer grab the brake drum too aggressively, the washer will emit a loud noise and shaking.

A way to resolve the problem is to actually force some slippage into the system.

When ours did the same thing, I sprayed some silicone grease very lightly and carefully into the brake drum.

Following is a description of how to access the brake system.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

When you pull the brake tube, check the condition of the brake shoes and when re-installing the transmission, be sure to align the clutch so that the plastic cam on the basket drive is outside of the smaller section of the clutch spring holder.

As an aside, when you remove the tub, instead of a special spanner nut wrench, I've used a short 10" pipe wrench and tapped the handle with a hammer. I also used a short piece of wood under the drive block when tapping it up with a hammer.

Be sure to align the tabs on the drive tube with the slots in the drive block when re-assembling the washer.

Kenmore Model 925 75 110 washing machine makes loud noises when the spinning cycle ends (as it stops spinning). Any ideas? Ease of repair ?

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

There is also an excellent PDF document from Whirlpool describing how Direct Drive washers work.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

We has the same basic problem with a Kenmore direct drive washer. At the end of the spin cycle we heard a loud noise as the brake stopped the drum from spinning.

Sometimes, what can happen is that the brake will grab the brake drum, like a brake on a car suddenly locking a wheel.

The brake is supposed to slow down and stop the drum without locking.

We were able to spray a small amount of silicone spray inside the brake drum, which allowed the shoes to more gently grab the drum.

See GURU JSROCK516 Description of how to remove cabinet and access the transmission. http://www.fixya.com/support/r699497-replacing_gearcase

Remove the cabinet and look at the drum directly above the silver colored clutch assembly.

Using an spray can of silicone spray, and a directional tube, spray a very small amount into the brake drum.

Washer stopping abruptly at end of spin cycle.

Hi, it sounds like maybe some dust has gotten in the basket drive pads causing it to stick. Has it been happening long? Sometimes it will work its way out. Try turning the tub with your hand clockwise. You can also put a heavy load in the washer (wet) and let it get to a high spin. Then open the lid and see if it starts stopping slower.
If this doesn't clear its self up, you will need to change the basketdrive.
Please let me know if this has helpped.

Thanks
Vic
