You probably need amplified speakers. The audio output of the sound card only provides a low level signal

Check the switches phones-speaker, check the connectors between the speakers and the amplifier, try to connect the speakers to some other amplifier to detect where is the problem , in speakers or in the amplifier.

If you disconnet you speakers and there is no problem, Then it's your speakers.
1. try your speaker wire in one port at a time (may have blown one of the outputs)
2. Check the speaker connections directly on your speakers (not loose or damaged)
3. try a different speaker all together and see if you get sound etc.
4. try a different wire from your speakers to your amp (wire may have shorted out or have breaks)

Hope this helps and please rate. If you require further info please comment and I'll get back to you asap

Is there a way to connect the Boston BA745 speakers to an Ipod. I have tried but do not get any sound.

The sound-output levels from the iPod are designed for "ear-bud" speakers, i.e., very low levels.
And, your iPod is under 1 Kg in weight.

In contrast, your speakers require an amplifier to push 10 to 30 watts to the speakers.
And, such an amplifier is over 10 Kg in weight, due to the circuitry required to do the amplification.

So, the "short" answer is NO.

The "long" answer is to use a cable to connect the audio-out from the iPod to an audio-in port on a stand-alone amplifier, and use speaker-wire to connect the amplifier to your speakers.

I have 2 KEF Q35 speakers, i have them wired up as normal on the outside ports, but there are another set of wiring ports labelled HF (one positive one negative) what are these for? please help!!

These are quite common, and are just separate connection for each speaker in the enclosure. Just bridge the connections red to red and black to black with cable (use something like 5amp house wiring cable) and then connect your cable from your amplifier to one of the "ports" See http://www.brilliancehifi.co.uk/how-to-bi-wire-speakers.htm As you can see you could "biwire" if you wanted go further and improve the sound quality
