I am having a problem with a Compaq Presario 1681 i was given. It refuses to boot saying that there is a disk in when there isent. I have already attempted to adjust the boot order and that has not fixed it. I know the cdrom drive works as this model has a built in cd player that works seperate from the computer itself.

Re: Compaq Presario 1681
Put your windows installation cd in the drive, then reboot. Press any key to boot from cd. Then select R to enter recovery console. Follow the prompts. Once in the recovery console, you should have a C:\ prompt. When there type "fixmbr" without the quotes. Once that finishes type "fixboot" and then let that finish, you'll probably have to type a "y" for yes stating that you want to do these options. Then finally type "chkdsk".
This should solve your problem, if not let me know, you'll probably need to do a repair install.

Your Compaq did not detect the hard disk, that is why it is asking for a bootable device such as a boot floppy disk. Check the BIOS configuration to see if the hard disk is detected, if not then re-seat the hard drive and boot up the Compaq again. If it still does not boot up, then the hard disk is probably faulty. To get the Compaq operating again, replace the faulty, install Windows operating system on the new hard drive, plus the Compaq's device drivers and your programs.
you need a compaq boot disk
ferkin compaqs are a pain in the O
try pulling the drive and inserting it into a portable enclosure than format it you will probably find there is 2 partions on the drive
usualy the first is the small 1 and it has only enough space the boot then it kicks to the second 1
if you use a portable enclosure and use the manage command you can see the partitions and you can format it as 1 huge drive rather than 2 smaller ones
Most model Compaq have the hard drive mounted behind a plactic panel on the RH edge or LH edge of the laptop. There is a screw that locks the panel in place. After you remove this screw then slide the panel down to unlock it and then pull the hard drive out.
What was your coworker doing on it? I would say you need to at least do a disk check. You can do this through windows repair console or in Vista you can boot to the disk and have it check boot up problems. Very easy.
