Tip

DYI Stud Finder

If you don't have the cash to shell out for a new stud finder, or just don't feel like heading to the store for a single item, try this little trick instead. Get a strong magnet, the stronger the better, and gently run it over the wall you want to find the studs in. Your magnet will be attracted to the metal screws, showing you right where your studs are. If you have a weak magnet, then tie it on a string and hold it by that. You'll see the reaction rather then feel it. If your using an old neodymium magnet from a scavenged hard drive, you'll feel the very obvious tug whenever it reaches something metal.

A little searching showed I'm not the first person to think of this, but it's not a trick that's been broadcast very much. Most of the time a search for "finding a stud without a stud finder" will get you results that tell you to tap the wall and listen for the echo. That trick doesn't work with all walls, or even all studs. So next time, grab a magnet.

My Bosch DWM 40L angle finder has locked itself on 888.8 and I can not swithch the machine off, even when I put in new batterie it does not correct itself, please can you help.

Open the the moveable arm and make it straight (180 degrees) or in line with the other.Take the screw off of the black cover at the elbow (1 screw). Lift from the round part and lift off. Then loosen the two screw just inside the cover. This will allow the flywheel to spin and you should now get a read out. If the flywheel does not spin then you need to replace that piece. Gently tighten the two screws and put the cover back on. Hope this helps!

Battery compartment in my angle finder overheats and battery indicator comes on a brand new set of batteries . why is that? i put a fresh set of batts.and when i turn it on the batteries on the right get...

There is an electronic component that is defective and it draws a lot of current (more than the normal rating) this makes the batteries over heat, if it's new ask for replacement of the tool.

Cheers!

Unable to make a straight cut with saw. Tried adjusting tension, lowered blade, made sure blade aligned properly and did not feed too quickly. HEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPP! Thanks in advance.

Hello, I think that the problem you are having is called "drift" . each blade will cut different than the last. The way I was taught to cure this goes as follows.
-take fence off off table(or just move over)
-get a good square piece of material appx. 1x3 and mark a straight line about 1/2" from edge the full length of the board.
-with out the fence cut the board along the line appx. 1/2 the length.
-shut off saw WITH board in it.
-use a angle finder along the edge of the board, set angle finder
-remove board and put the fence back on.
-now slide the angle finder up to the fence, you should see that the angle is different than the fence (this is the DRIFT ), adjust the fence to the angle finder( I know that the smaller saws usalley don't have this adjustment ) you will have to find a way i.e. shim etc.

This is a very common problem but once you get the idea it is a easy fix
Remember: A guy taught me and I taught you, pass it along thats what we do.LOL
Hope it helped.

How do I read a multi-purpose angle finder? Do you take the top or bottom measurement as your angle?

It depends on what you want to measout. For less than a 90° angle, use the numbers below 90°. For angles more that 90° use the numbers above 90°. A flat surface has an angle of 180°. At any given point. If you make a point somewhere in the surface, and raise an end 1°, The angle @ the pivot point is 179°.

Magnetic brush size

Yes and no. From 1999 to early 2008, excluding the slightly beefier "Ergo" models, the size / part number is the same. However, on the newest models there are differences in density between some models. Wire placement is different from the older models.

Skil 2100daf angle finder

I was trying to reset the zero on my angle finder. It's a Powerfist Digital Angle Finder, the same as the Skil 2100.

After turning the unit on, if I press the Miter and Hold button together and hold them, the unit goes into 'calibration' mode. (The display flashes 0.0). If you do nothing, it will always stay in this mode forever after that.

You can then reset your unit - it takes time however and patience.

With the aid of a large protractor, draw angles on a large sheet of paper (I used a couple of 11 X 17" pages) from 0 degrees all the way up to 220 degrees.

Turn on your angle finder and make sure the numbers are flashing 0.0. This will be your 0 degree reading. Hold the finder closed and press the Hold button once.

The display will now read 10 degrees. Open up the finder until it matches your 10 degree marks on your paper and press the Hold button again.

The display will now read 20 degrees. Open up the finder until it matches your 20 degree marks and press the Hold button again.

Continue setting your angles in this fashion up 'til you reach 220 degrees. The next button press will close the calibration cycle and the numbers will stop flashing.

Your unit is re-calibrated. Now, if it's off - you've only yourself to blame.

Good luck!
